Bad noise reduction with D2X pictures?
Hi,
I am just trying a Nikon D2X to compare with a Canon 1D Mark 2.
Using PS to develop the raw's, they both have nearly the same noise,
but using the CO sofware, I found very good results
on 400 ASA pictures of the Canon and bad on the Nikon (noisy).
Is there a known difference? Will there be any change in the future?

Herrmann08,
This is a User to User Forum.
Technical Support is offered through the Support area of our web site, this is how you receive the most timely of answers.
The tools are there for adjusting image files for both cameras.
Color Noise adjustment tool is there as well.
However, if setting the same adjustments for comparison, this may be a mistake. Because of the microscopic technology of the CCD of the D2x, using the same settings on the sliders would be near Apples-to-Oranges comparison.
Always improvement into the future, but as it stands, if you want the best possible image from a Nikon D2x RAW file, the answer is Capture One.
Only difference is WB.
There are many D2x + Capture One users that are extremely happy. The Custom Camera White Balance is not read because of Nikon’s encryption. Best to choose another WB preset and adjust the Session WB in Capture One.
The problem exists only for in-camera Custom White Balance setting.
See Knowledge Base article #1769 for more information.

In general, it would be better to shoot a D2x with one of the camera’s preset WB choices. Using Custom, the data does not get interpreted in Capture One; and choosing Auto is too variable of a value per shot.

Keith Carpenter,
sorry, I am quite new, just testing your software. I found your answers on most of the questions here, so I thougt that is the normal way.
I just looked on it again, but I still feel there is too much noise in all pictures above 100 ASA, even those ones taken in JPEG's look better. All other things look pretty good, so please work on the noise !

Hermann,
Welcome, and no problem... just wanted you to know where to find quicker answers to more urgent issues or questions you may have.
Most of the Answers on this Forum do come from Users. Staff members monitor to be sure answers are offered. For this thread, I was hoping another D2X shooter would weigh-in and provide some insight.
To be honest, this issue you've raised is a first in that we have not had any Support Cases involving this issue. The only concern regarding quality of D2X files is with the Preview display only. If Preview is viewed in the Focus Display window of the Focus tab, or once processed, the images have been fine.
Be careful comparing to have Sharpening settings disabled, too much sharpening can introduce noise to an image. And leave Banding Suppression off, this tool is primarily used for Phase One digital backs. It actually Adds noise to an image because they are so noiseless.
Sincerely,

Keith,
thanks for your replay.
I just tried again last night. I have had a 1D Mark II and a 20D before the D2X.
And I still find that your programm is removing the noise very well from the Canon cameras, some times, even dissabled, too much.
But with the new Nikon for more 200 ASA it is not enough, even with no sharpening and most possible noise slider.
But all other things look great !
