another workflow question
Hi - I'm new and have scanned both this forum and documentation but haven't found an answer to the following workflow question ... any guidance would be very much appreciated.
I am coming over from Aperture (yes, finally). I have ~80K raw images and my standard workflow has been to import directly to my laptop, make edits there, export files I like and then relocate all the RAW files (with edits) to an external drive (and then another external drive backs up both my laptop and the external media storage drive with Time Machine).
I'm hoping to preserve this method, as it leaves the thumbnails/previews on my laptop so I can always view my images even if I cannot directly edit them until I plug in the external media drive.
With that said, when I migrated my Aperture files, my new C1 catalog file is on the external media drive. And when I did my first new import, I have another new C1 catalog file on my laptop that I have not relocated the original files from to the external harddrive. So...
1) is there a simple 'relocate masters' type option I can use to move my latest RAW files to the external harddrive while preserving the previews on my laptop and
2) how best can I move the Aperture file catalog (previews only, not the raw files) onto my laptop so I can view them without the external hard drive?
Any links to documenation, walkthroughts, etc. would be really appreciated. Eager to learn about this new (to me) software! 😊

Hi,
I don't know Aperture, but Capture One doesn't "import" the RAW files when you import images. RAW files are left on your external disk drive (unless you ask the software to save your RAW within the catalogue), but adjustments are saved in the catalogue if you work using catalogue mode rather than session. I would suggest to keep your catalogue on its default location (usually the "Pictures" folder on a Mac). When you disconnect the external HDD where your RAW files are, you can keep working on your images, as far as you don't export them or process to adjustments needing a 100% enlargement.
It seems to me, then, that the Aperture workflow is (was) different from Capture one's.
So, I would suggest first to move your first C1 catalogue (created when you imported Aperture's catalogue) to the "Pictures" folder and second to open Capture One from this catalogue by choosing the one you want to open: launch C1 while pressing the Alt/option key, and it will offer you the choice of the catalogue you want to open.

Edit : when you import images, Capture One creates thumbnails and previews (the size of which can be chosen in the Preferences), which are all saved in the catalogue.0 -
You can move images from a managed (like Aperture was by default and inside the catalog file) to a referenced (in a separate location) at will. There are tutorials on catalog management on the learning hub and YouTube. Make sure any moving is done within C1 otherwise you have to re-establish links.
I would recommend referenced. Even if RAW files are offline, you can (with some limits) edit your images for those edits that don't rely on the RAW file. When back online it just works. Create the catalog on local storage and store the images where you like. A catalog can span drives.0
