EXIF data updating

Capture One never modifies the RAW files. To modify EXIF data you'll have to use an external utility such as exiftool.

Hmm, I now see my confusion. After some experiments I found that Aperture actually has only made the date/time changes in it's database and not to the original, in this case orf. Interestingly any tiffs it made from the same file showed the corrected date. Really that is all I want. I just want sort by date in the CAP1 collection.

I see there is a GUI for exiftool so I might try that. But I'm still concerned that CAP1 might not see it once the image is in a collection?

On OS X you can try Exif Editor. It will change the camera exif.

You will have to reimport for C1 to see the change.

It does work. I've done it.

Also, Photo Meta Edit will work.

fyi, no need to reimport the file if a metadata change has been made outside of C1. Just right-click on the image and select "Load Metadata", this will load the data from the file on disk. Also works for multiple images, just select all and choose the same command.

Hated this about LR; if you edited the data outside of LR, it would recognize it and offer to reload it. If you did that, it would overwrite not just metadata but all adjustments! Absolutely insane! Did that once for an entire shoot that was already completely edited, and just like that all adjustments were wiped. I was quite a bit in shock. Good thing I had a catalog backup from right before, so I just replaced the current catalog and everything was back to normal. Didn't go near that function again.

Aperture, just like C1, does not write metadata changes, by default. However, you can make it write to disk on command.

As far as exif editing tools, I personally didn't have a good experience with Exif Editor. Fine for single changes but it wasn't able to handle batch changes with hundreds or thousands of files. Would just slow to a crawl. Location targeting was useless. Meanwhile found PhotoMill which works flawlessly for almost all my metadata needs. There is still no keywording equivalent tool to Aperture but Pixave might look promising.

Did you specify to change the original files? I have no problem doing this for my Canon cameras with Aperture. And as others have said, C1 doesn't ever write anything to the original file, so you need something like Aperture or EXIFtool to do it. That's a key reason I'm sticking with Aperture for most of my metadata work: I really want the data embedded in my files for various reasons, although I recognize the small risk of corrupting a file in the process. I've done this with 50k images and so far haven't encountered a problem.

I wish C1 would at least give us the option—at our own risk—of embedding IPTC metadata into the original files.
