I'm getting the same message ... is this a problem on my end (say my firewall settings or something like that) or is Phase One just overloaded for a bit?

    Anyone know?

I'm guessing it is your firewall settings. When I first tried to activate, I was getting the same message. As soon as I went into the firewall permissions and gave the program permission to access the internet, it connected and the activation went through immediately.

I don't think so. I have disabled my Firewall completeley for a moment - the same error.

    Thanks for your answer,

Go into the firewall internet applications permissions and make sure that you have given Capture One 4 or Phase One or whatever it is called complete access to the internet. With my McAfee program, just disabling the firewall didn't work, but when I went into the applications permissions and made sure that Capture One wasn't blocked, I immediately connected and was able to activate.
