Older NEF files crashes C1 6.2.2

I have been trying to work on a group of older files on an external drive (Nikon D70 NEFs from 5 years ago). I processed one image, but when I went to another, it never finished loading the preview in the viewer. That is, the image remained pixelated and never "cleared". None of the other files in that folder could be properly viewed and processed. I get the spinning beachball and Capture One freezes. At one point on a restart I got clear, sharp previews in the viewer, but all the adjustments were greyed out. I had to force quit that and when I restarted C1 reverted to the default layout. I have cataloged the files in Media Pro and I can process the them sucesfully with Aperture, Lightroom and ACR. They can also be viewed in Photo Mechanic. I am runing OX 10.6.8. Any suggestions? Copy a few image files to your Mac's internal drive, open with CO 6 and see whether that helps.

Thanks for the advice. I moved the folder to another drive and that worked. They were on my oldest drive. Perhaps it is going south, so I am moving everything off it and retiring it.

Might be that you have permissions on the external drive. Cmd + I the drive in finder and check that ignore permissions is set. Retiring the drive sounds like a good idea though.
