Paint with Black and White

    It is very straightforward. On the local adjustments tab, create an adjustment layer. By default it will be called Layer 1 but you can call it something more meaningful, such as Black & White. With that layer selected, drop the saturation down to zero. (You will see no change yet.) Then take a brush (just press B for brush). You can right click to see what size of brush, hardness, and opacity you are getting. You'll want full opacity for this. Paint on the layer to change the parts you want to be black & white. If you make a mistake hit E for erase and remove the mask you are creating. You may want to change the size and hardness of the brush and/or the eraser to do the detailed bits. [Edited to add: also zooming in to do the detailed bits helps. Also you can change the brush size quickly using the [ and ] keys.]
