    Hallo Peter,

Are you using the Lens correction tool or distortion correction slider?

What sort of file type are you working on?

    Hi Grant,

    I have a RAW File (.RW2) loaded.
This is a RAW File from my Panasonic DMC G3 camera.
    I tried multiple files.
The automatic correction works silently, but I cannot do manual corrections.
I tried distortion and CA, but all sliders and checkmarks are greyed out and inactive.

With original Panasonic lenses this is not a problem. These are automatically corrected without any notice.
It is a problem if I use manual lenses without electronic connection to the camera.

Maybe I misunderstand something, and this feature works only with supported lenses?

    best,
    Peter

    Hallo Peter,

Possibly the Panasonic files are a special case since I understand that the digital lens correction is part of the product design concept.

I have Canon equipment and although the lenses I use are not listed for the auto correction I can use generic or make one up and save it (as I did for a manual lens I use quite a lot.) Alternatively just us Generic and adjust for each file using the Distortion slider (and the others if required.)

That said I tend to be using longer focal length lenses and so distortion is not much of a problem. Only my 14mm (non Canon) is really challenged and even that is not so obvious when used on a crop sensor body.

The Distortion tool will generally give me much the same results on my S90's CR2 files as the Canon internal jpg software conversion does, but with the option to retain what the Canon adjustment throws away. It's only required at the wide angle end of the zoom.

I'm not sure if this information helps you but it might provide something that helps you to work out what is happening with your files.

Hopefully someone will be along soon with more inside knowledge and guidance. If I discover anything more I will let you know.

    Regards,

    Grant Perkins

I just wanted to try it before buying, dont need it on a regular base.
Possibly I will decide for the Express version, this has no manual lens correction anyway.
(But it has the silent automatic correction for Panasonic lenses)

I am very pleased with the results so far, much better than Silkypix SE which was delivered with my camera, less noise and better sharpness.

    Thank you,
    Peter

    Peter,

I have not tried the Express version. There are things in the Pro version that I am using regularly and would miss in Express.

Bear in mind that the current sales price offer I saw in an eMail today is very attractive for the full Pro version. Or take express and upgrade later if you feel the need.

Just to clarify my questions a little bit:

Im an amateur and I dont need most of the features, that the pro version has.
But, of course, I want professional results 😉
What I would want are lens corrections.

I would not need repair tools and other tools that are duplicated in my Image editor.
I open all my images in 3x16 Bit color depth in the external editor after developing, and this works seamlessly with Capture One Express.
    I use this: http://www.pl32.de
It has features like the big Photoshop, full colormanagement and full 16 bit and 32 bit colordepth support and it loads most 8 bit and 16 bit Photoshop plugins. (It should also load the PTlens plugin, but I have not tried this yet)

I can probably do lens corrections in my Image editing software with PTlens, but these are post-corrections.
It was my thought, that lens correction (especially CA correction) should be done before denoising and sharpening.
I will not need this always, only when I use lens converters or manual lenses.

So my question is, if manual lens corrections are possible for non profiled or non
supported lenses, and if this are pre-corrections or post-corrections.

Currently I cannot do any manual corrections at all in the trial version of C1pro.
    (Vignetting correction works)
The other options are grayed out and it says "unsupported file".
Is this a problem of my installation or is this, because I need to get lense profiles or something else?

I use Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit with an 6 core AMD phenom processor and 8GB RAM.
I use the german version and folder names or aliases differ from the english version.
    Could this cause the problem?

Thanks for your hint about the rebate! This was not obvious from the website, I didnt notice it.
When does the rebate offer end?
Possibly I must decide this soon..

    best regards,

    Peter

    Peter,

According to the eMail I received the offer ends on 26 Feb.

I'm not sure about your files. However if my memory is correct I have seen the same situation (no adjustments possible) when editing jpg files. This suggests to me that the C1 designers have considered what to do with files that are already pre-processed (like my Canon S90 jpg files for example) and elected to disallow further adjustments through lens correction. Whether this is because, in theory, the adjustments have already been applied (as in the case of my jpgs) or that the data required by the C1 adjustment system is simply not available (for whatever reason) in those files I don't know. Both reasons would be valid I think, at least for a pure photo product for which the main objective RAW file conversion.

Once you move away from the RAW scenario into pre-processed files (like jpgs) the decisions might be different to suit practical needs - but then making that move takes us into the area of Graphic Editing where anything may be acceptable.

To my mind the differences are about whether the 'editor of choice' started out as mainly as a Graphics Editor that has extended to include photos in its capabilities (notably Adobe of course) or a RAW file converter that has had some photo editing capability added on over time.

A Graphics based package will have a tool for the job, seen as a graphics manipulation rather than a photo edit. A RAW file converter may decide to stop attempting and further actions which, as far as it can be told, do not seem to be purely photo image creation activities from a RAW file. (Or commonly made adjustments to a jpg.)

For now it seems that the perfect Software application is yet to be created - but that's a developing story as new products arrive and older ones disappear.

For me the options not available in the Express version (according to the comparison chart) made that option a non-starter. However if I was a PhotoShop user it might be exactly the right product for the conversion part of my workflow with all other adjustments being handled in PS.

    Enjoy the decision making! 😉

    Hi Peter,

the difference between Express and Pro might be bigger than it seems. I love for example the great keystone correction tool to correct perspective distortion, which is just offered within the Pro version. I do also have the feeling that as much as possible should be corrected as early as possible in the editing workflow (when sensefull).

I am sorry to not be able to help you with your camera based problem, but maybe you want to have a look at my website http://www.jd-photography.de (German). You will find there lots of C1 workshops (online) and tutorials completely for free. This might change your opinion regarding Express vs. Pro, too.

    Regards,
    Joerg

I made these additional tests, using the 30 day trial version of C1pro:

    1) I converted a Panasonic RW2 file into a DNG File, using Adobes free DNG converter.
Result: C1Pro says "Unsupported File" and no corrections where possible.
Not a real problem, but I think, in this case manual corrections should be possible.

    2) I made a photo with my Dynax 5D, this gives a MRW File (Minolta RAW)
I had a Sigma 50-200 Lens on the camera while shooting.
Result: C1Pro says: (in german language) "Objektiv:" "generic" and it displays focal length and aperture correctly.
CA correction works and manual distortion correction works.

    3) Panasonic RW2 file, a Panasonic Lens was on the camera while shooting:
    Result:
    "Objektiv:" "Unsupported file".
Focal length and aperture are displayed correctly.
I can set the checkmarks for CA and for distortion, and move the sliders, but nothing happens, the image flickers, but doesnt change.
Probably C1Pro thinks, this lens is already corrected automatically and does not need correction.
Now lets consider the case, I had a wideangle converter on the lens and want to correct it. This is not possible.

    4) Panasonic RW2 file, and a Minolta Lens with adapter was on the camera while shooting.
    Result:
    "Objektiv:" "Unsupported File".
Focal length and aperture is not displayed. No wonder, because this is impossible, the lens had no electronic connection and was used as a manual Lens.
I cannot set any checkmarks and cannot move the sliders for CA and distortion.
It should be possible to correct this lens manually.

    Conclusion:
I think, cases 3) and 4) are bugs, because this should be possible. So far I have read, the support for the Panasonic G3 camera is preliminary and I hope, some Phase One technician will read this and forward the problem to the developers.

Thanks, to you guys, you pointed me into the right direction, so I got the right ideas what to test!

    Best regards,

    Peter
