iMac configuration
I'm about ready to buy a new iMac and wanted to get a little advice first. I'm coming from a mid-2015 MacBook Pro 2.8 i7, 1TB SSD, 16gb ram, graphics Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB with a BenQ SW271 4K monitor. My biggest issue is when shooting with a Sony A7R3 to the 4K monitor it takes a bit for the preview to render full sharpness. Does higher vram effect the image rendering to full sharpness any better or is it only advantageous for video editing? Wondering if I should get the base iMac that has 4gb vram and upgrade to 16gb ram and 512gb SSD from the fusion drive or if it's worth getting the higher end iMac with 8gb of vram plus 16gb ram and the 512gb SSD. File processing speed I'm not so concerned with, just be nice to see snappier display rendering when images are coming in and when clients are zipping back and forth through images making selects. Thanks.

get the best what you can...
regarding the vram...for the recent C1 version used on 4k/5k monitors, phase one recommends 8GB VRAM and for profesional use doubling the resources....
get good CPU - faster is better 😊
get 8gb base RAM and purchase another 8gb from 3rd party to save money..test if its enough...this is the only one parameter which you can upgrade later on if you are not happy.
get best video card with max vram...you cant upgrade, which i regret now - you can only add expensive EGPU
think twice about SSD internal...i have 512 ssd but i have in use only 150gb...because all raws, media etc is on external spinner...you can add ssd as external later if need...0 -
I have a 27" late 2015 iMac with i7 and GPU with 2GB VRAM, 1TB Fusion drive. I chose this configuration because it was fairly decent, and I got a great deal on it. A better choice would have been 1TB or 512 GB SSD for the main drive.
An internal SSD has the fastest access, but one would have to buy a very large, very expensive SSD initially to always keep all files there. Better to buy a mid sized SSD and keep current working files on it, and then have external drives for backups and less often used files. I have 4 external drives, two rotating and two SSD.
I'm very happy that I got the i7 processor. The extra cores often seem to be in use.
The Fusion drive as the main drive is fast enough for most applications, but to speed up Capture One, I moved all the image files and the Capture One Catalogs to an external SSD. An SSD will slow down when it is near full. If you have 1TB of files, you want at least a 1.5TB of drive space.
The GPU memory often seems to be half full, while the GPU processor is never heavily utilised. I would say that the VRAM memory is too small to get the full benefit of the GPU. C1 will make use of a GPU, but likely at least 4GB of VRAM is required to be really effective.
I have 24GB of RAM. I occasionally see over 16GB in use when Capture One is running. I got the machine with 8GB of RAM, and then bought 16GB of Kingston RAM. This was a good choice.
I got a CalDigit Thunderbolt dock. This has given me about 10 other ports of varying types, and the speed is about the same as ports on the Mac. Some of the docks are not very stable, but this one is rock solid. This was a good choice.0
