Maybe more efficient if the previews are there, but that's the way it works.

Consider that previews can be missing, existing but outdated or have a different size as your current setup tells. In CO8 also thumbnails are generated. Cutting a long story short, better start fresh with new previews so it will run smoothly afterwards! 😉

Thank you Paul, I'll keep that in mind.

Some more info: I've recently added a 4K monitor and this is my main now, the full hd is secondary now. I've been working on the 4K primarily (editing, cropping etc). Last weekend I switched to the "dual monitor" workspace. You mentioned the previews could be out of date, can it be that the change of workspace is the cause for this?

Maybe. With 'out of date previews' I was actually referring to the fact that it is my impression that never versions of CO might like to generate previews again. However, I must admit I am not 100% sure this is correct.
In you case the change in workspace with a 4K monitor might also come with a change in preview size, which you can set in the preferences. As a result, CO8 will regenerate preview, bring them 'up to date'.
