Color readouts for grayscale image

Hi.
I'm using the 256 step target from
When using color readouts, I do not get 256 distinct values when I mouse over the various cells.
The darkest cell, for example, is RGB 0,0,0 but the next one, which should be 1,1,1 is actually 2,2,2

Is there some configuration setting that I'm missing?

  First thing I would check is what "Curve" are you using under the "Base Characteristics", I would think you need to set it to linear otherwise CO is applying some curve to the image. Also, as it seems like PhaseOne produces a ICC target more on what they think is pleasing, who knows what the conversion formula is doing.

  I was hoping there is a built in profile which faithfully reproduces original color values without any processing.
  
  I tried setting linear in base characteristics, but some colors were still off.
