We have briefly tested the Canon EOS cameras on 10.4.7 and had only positive experiences.
The 10.4.7 appeared to fix the problem we had in OS 10.4.6 with connecting all the Canon USB based cameras.

Have you checked that the 20D display is not lighting?
If it is on, the camera will not connect to the application.
Then you just need to press the capture button on the camera a little until the display turn off.
After that it will normally connect.

If this trick doesn't work please tell me, and we will take a further look at the matter.

    Dear Ole,

    Thank you for your response.

I have checked if the display on the camera is on or not and it is not. As I type I am trying to connect the 20D to the PowerBook via C1 and all I am getting is the continuous spinning \"barber pole\" without connection. I certainly would be appreciative of any thoughts you may have which would enable me to shoot tethered with my 20D and PowerBook.

    Hi,
Check and see if In the Setup menu for the 20D just above format in COMMUNICATION, make sure that is set for \"Normal\" NOT PTP. Also I had problems using a USB hub with other USB devices connected. Have the camera set for RAW only
    Now now canon 20 D shoots w/o a problem

Thank you Eavesphoto for your recommendations.

I checked that my communication settings were correct, removed myself from my network and removed any USB devices but to no avail - still no connection with my 20D.

Now to follow up, as well as the two machines listed above I also had the C1 trial installed on a PPC G4 running 10.4.5 I had no tethered connection problems with that configuration and as a test I installed 10.4.6 to see what would happen. After reading the problems associated with 10.4.6 expected that I wouldn't get a connection - I did - all was running just fine.

As a further test I installed 10.4.7 on the machine and tried again - no connection. I checked all my settings and all appeared to be correct.

    So to recap then:

Intel iMac 10.4.7 - all OK
    G4 PowerMac 10.4.5 - all OK
    G4 PowerMac 10.4.6 - all OK
    G4 PowerMac 10.4.7 - no connection
    G4 PowerBook 10.4.7 - no connection

As you can imagine I'm a little confused.

    Dear Bathurst,
this appears to be a bug re-introduced by Apple in 10.4.7. Just to clarify, your findings are correct; the 10.4.7 is affecting only USB Canons (eg. 20D, 5D) on PowerPC machines (G4,G5). It DOES NOT affect the intel macs. Quite on the contrary, the 10.4.6 update has introduced a very similar (if not the same) bug on the intel macs only and 10.4.7 has fixed it.
It is quite confusing matter, but just to clarify again, in order to be able to use Canon USB cameras on intel macs you need 10.4.7 and in order to have it working properly on PowerPC you have to stay with 10.4.6
I am very sorry, but as this is an Apple bug, we cannot do anything about it at the moment beyond notifying Apple, which has hapenned already. Let's hope it will be fixed in 10.4.8 on both platforms. Until then, the only advice/recommendation that I can provide to you is downgrade/stay with 10.4.6 on your PowerPC machines.

    Dear Ezekiel,

Thank you very much for making sense of what was very confusing to me. Your understanding of my findings was correct.

To enable me to shoot tethered with my 20D I decided to uninstall 10.4.7 from my PPC G4 and go back to 10.4.6. To do so I did an archive and install from the original 10.4.0 installation disc and then as an exercise I installed consecutively from 10.4.0/1,2,3,4,5 to 10.4.6 - at all stages I tested the tethering capability of C1 with my 20D. I found that with all versions of the OS the camera was able to be connected to the machine with the ability to shoot tethered.

Hopefully Apple will sort out the bug with the next update of their operating system and in the mean time I will use what's left of my trial period to evaluate C1.

Thank you very much for you help,

Good to hear that Jakubs clarifying work here in the Phase One test department helped you to get back running.

To reintialize to 10.4.6 it actually enough to install 10.4.0 and then update directly to 10.4.6.
That will simplify the matter for others in your situation using PowerPC ineeding to roll back from 10.4.7 to 10.4.6.

We are sorry for the inconvinience this causes but we currently see no other way.

    Dear Ole,
Thank you for your reply. I realize I could have gone from 10.4.0 to 10.4.6 in one easy step but as I had time to spare and as an exercise I took the long way around. I look forward to utilizing C1.

download the correct version of the ppc IOUSBFamily.kext, which for my powerbook g4 is the one from 10.4.6
    Mac OS X 10.4.6 8I127 IOUSBFamily.kext 2.2.8 for PPC System Update for PPC based systems v 228.4.0
This downloads a package installer and it replaces your 10.4.7 usb controller file with the 4.0 version which does work. Just to be safe I made a backup of the file first, it's in your system/library/extensions folder
I did this successfully and it worked right away.
This way you don't have to worry about permissions and such, as it works just like any other apple updater software.
good luck to all you Canon USB users.

    Dear bendavanza,

Thanks for the tip - I'll give it a run. Seems a shame not to be able to use the latest operating system because just one application is incompatible with it.

    Bathurst,

I 'm sure that Apple and Canon could get it together very soon.
Patience I suppose, maybe the next update will make it all work again.
    Cheers,
