Canon Skintones
I've recently converted to Canon and have been testing my cameras. My Mark II 1DS is performing exactly how I expected it too. My 5D is another beast all together. It seems no matter what I'm doing I can't get my skintones to have the same pleasant look as the Mark II..
To save some replies, I've already calibrated, downloaded recommended etc profiles, tried hue adjustments, pretty much everything I can think off. One thing I've noticed from just testing is if I choose the 20D camera profile and export the image and the 5D camera profile and export I'm getting identical numbers in photoshop.. Is there a reason for these two profiles being identicl? I thought they were different sensors in those two cameras.
Any adjustment recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
I'm using the latest pro version FYI.
Thanks
Lance

I finally realzied what my problem was. When opening the 5D raw files from either of my cameras the midtones are somewhere between 1/3 to a 1/2 stop too high. My Mark II 1DS doesn't have this issue. I borrowed a 5D from a friend and it was also to high.
Once I got my midtones at the proper settings and set white balance using either a whibal or a colorchecker my skintones are perfect.
Is it possible there is a corrupt 5D profile in the latest update?

I too, noticed the difference...
I downloaded a beta of Lightroom a while back and I didn't see the difference as badly.
You can download a trial and test it. I'd be curious to see your results

I have had excellent results with my 1dsMII and 5D- in fact, I have tweaked both profiles to my taste using Pro. Interestingly enough there are times that I use my 1dsMII profile with 5D images. I tried the same using LR, but there seems to be no place to use a camera profile- so those results were inferior. 0 -
How exactly did you get the 'midtones at the proper settings" I have some of the same issue and I'd like to know what you did 0 -
UncleMike I used the curves dialog to fix my midtone issue with the 5D.. Basically take the center of the curve and drag down slightly.
Aran I have noticed that also. Now that I've had the Canons for a awhile and have been shooting more and more I have used the Mark II with the 5D for a few outside nature shots myself.0 -
I use the COLOR EDITOR feature in Pro to adjust any of the tone that I feel need attention-
Workflow>Color Editor>select the profile to modify>use eye dropper to select the skintone range> THEN adjust the saturation/hue and lightness to make it the way you want- simple.
I have MANY profiles that I have made from the base profile- some for dark skin tones that sometimes go too yellow in the highlight for my tastes, some for Chrome that needs to retain highlights, some to punch up a reds , or even greens in a landscape etc.
The color editor is maybe the most powerful tool that C1 Pro has- once the profile is done you can use it and adjust it over and over again depending upon the circumstances- try it you will like it- Aran0
