An Extraordinarily Disturbing Event
I was working in Capture One when, quite unexpectedly, an image went offline…then another…and then another. I quit Capture One, and found my desktop in this harrowing state:

Somehow, every image from four different folders (my “2014†folder and its three sub-folders) got magically teleported onto the desktop and stacked into neat little piles.
It wasn’t too difficult or time consuming to move the images back, but imagine if it had been every photo from every folder and subfolder in my entire photo library.
Upon restarting Capture One, it prompted me to choose a catalog as if it had forgotten my preference (and anyway, I only have one catalog), but once I did this the app opened up and presented me with all of my photos seemingly back online as if nothing had happened.
Anyone care to venture a guess as to what may have happened, and, more importantly, how I may prevent such an extraordinarily disturbing event from happening again?

Okay, I’m pretty sure I know what happened.
I was viewing images in a smart album titled “Europe 2014†which displays the contents of my Europe 2014 folder (and its sub-folders) on the hard disk. I had all of the photos selected in the browser and must have (three fingers) dragged when I meant to (two fingers) scroll the filmstrip, nudging the photos just enough to drag them out of the Capture One window and onto the desktop without noticing.
I actually did not even know this was possible. I’m used to apps such as Lightroom and Aperture which either make copies of photos you drag to the desktop (Lightroom), or make copies of preview jpegs to the desktop (Aperture).
So, lesson learned: Capture One is an actual file browser which moves files if you’re not careful!0 -

It might be a good idea for you to file a support request. You are right. This should only be doable by someone who really wants to do it. At the very least there should be a (configurable) confirmation dialog box.0 -
I have no idea what standard Apple may require for their view of consistency but I suspect that you may find many people would object to enforced messages - especially if they related to things that are easily performed accidentally using touch screens but not when using non-touch devices.
That said on my system (Windows but I assume the same would be available on Mac) the Preferences feature has a section for Warnings that appears to set on by default a warning option for when moving files. If you have this option on Mac and it if ticked to be on BUT you got no warning using an accidental 3 digit drag you may want to point that out to the C1 support team in a Support Case so that they can consider what they might do to offer greater control.
My personal suggestion would be to disable touch screen functionality since I have rarely found it to be of much practical use in any application I regularly use.

I’m actually using a trackpad rather than a touchscreen, but clearly this thing can be too clever for its own good.
Anyway, it seems like the undo idea couldn’t hurt.0 -

It's the same difference in my view. I agree that they can be too smart at times - or maybe too dumb depending on one's angle of view at the time!
Most things in C1 do have an undo option but I think once you get to functionality that is likely calling whatever routine the OS uses (no point in reinventing a wheel) such things may not apply or be robust.
I'm not familiar with Macs - there may be other issues involved.

At the very least there could be a preference to control the behavior of dragging a trillion images out of the Capture One window. One should be able to choose between: - · Do nothing
· Export versions
· Move originals
· Ask me what to do
Though honestly I don’t see any reason why someone would want to move their original images out of a Capture One catalog considering that Capture One then loses track of them. It might make sense if you use sessions.0
