Regarding the cropping-blooming issue: first thought is the OpenCL setting of CO6. Try to set it to never.
However this does not explain that it does not occur with older captures. Maybe you can elaborate on the recent update/upgrade history of hardware, OS X and CO6.

Regarding the tethering issue, a power problem comes to mind first. Same hardware or new computer, cable, powered hub?
BTW, I assume you referred to a H25 back?

    Hi Paul,

Solved it. The vignetting option was left on from a previous shot. Subsequent shots were too small and centered to see the issue but more recent shots were not and the cropping action had the screen furiously remapping the tones.

    Thanks for the help.

It would be a nice feature to have a global reset with individual include/exclude options for that action.

Good to hear you solved it. With regard to your global reset suggestion, the following might help as a workaround or a solution.

Assume, you need to know which tools are in affect on a particular image or variant:
    - Select the image, copy all adjustments to the clipboard (Cmd+Shift+C) with AutoSelect Adjust enabled at the Adjustments Clipboard and to the the clipboard. All adjustments affecting the image are checked.
    - Now you can either manually reset the tools, or create a new variant, deselect the unwanted adjustments in the clipboard and apply to the new variant.
    - Delete the initial variant (optional).
