Red One Scarlette X
The owner of my company is looking to buy a Red camera for video and I know he will push to use those files for stills too. Will Capture be compatible in the near future for these Raw files or am I gonna have to come up with a whole new workflow?
Thanks,
James

hmmm…
Lucky guy with the Red One !
As far as for the still raw, I think that converting them first to DNG might work…0 -
You better do what I've just done! fx-phd davinci resolve course and a control surface ☹️ 0 -
To Nicholas,Thanks for the reply. I don't handle any of the video in our studio. My boss keeps all that production to himself and having to first convert to DNG kills what is a tried and truely efficient workflow using Capture One and any compatible Raw camera file. plus the Scarlette, which is the Red we will get, as with any of the other Reds, isn't truely optimised to be still cameras. They are great video cameras that you can get a good still image off of. I work on literally hundreds of files a day and adding an extra step or five just isn't fesiable. Plus if you compare the sensors of the Scarlette to even an H25 Phase One back pixel for pixel its just over half the resolution. Adding the Red will be a boost to our video business but still photography pays the bills.
To Rap_Digital, Thank you for your suggestion. As with my reply to Nicholas, I don't get to handle video and will be expected to keep my current workflow, along with the volume, and color control that I've established using Capture One. I have the responsibility of making sure what is captured on set is the same that gets to my desk and then delivered to the client over the course of hundreds of images a day from multiple photographers using sometimes different camera systems. I have to show that it can or cannot be done without a loss of time, color fidelity, or efficiency. An image here and there from the Red won't hurt that but, the talk is that Scarlettes will replace all our cameras.

I've delved into the 5k vs megapixels vs resolution between Red and Phase One. The hype is that the Red Scarlette "Still" camera will shoot 5K still images. Based on the math used to get that number my P45 back shoots roughly a 16K or larger still image. This is all based on the use of a Bayer pattern of RGB pixels on the two sensors. Resolution is a product that is controlled by the quality of the lens used and it's optimization for the particular sensor in question. This is a rough interpretation on my part. Please let me know if these assumptions are totally off base.

The Scarlet pixel dimensions are 5120 x 2700 The P45 is 7216 x 5412. I've used frames taken from Red One 4k for DPS in magazine and couldn't tell the difference between it and the canon files we were shooting beside it. Medium format back may be different but we would have had to light it differently aswell. One thing of note is that one still needs to shoot for motion OR still in that if shot with 180degree shutter the stills quite often arent that sharp ie. motion blur and if the shutter is closed down for sharper stills the motion looks crappy. Just on thing I noticed and wasnt expecting. 0
