Newbie Question: How to change default import folder?
Hi, folks--
Pretty darned new here, so I apologize if this has been asked and answered (though I couldn't find it on the Knowledge Base, nor on a forum search). I am trying to import a referenced catalog from an external drive and CO7 creates a directory by default in the "My Pictures" folder of my root drive. This doesn't work for me as my catalog is too large. I'd like to move the default directory to a separate drive. How do I do this?
Thanks,
Greg
P.S. In case it matters, the archive for which I'm trying to build a catalog is 150,000 images. I'm using the trial version of the software but I did update it to the latest version.

Simply use FIle>New Catalog and change the Location.
The new catalog will then be created on the directory of your choice. However, for best performance, when using a referenced catalog it is recommended to keep it on the Local Drive. A referenced catalog simply references the images that are on the external source, as such your catalog itself will be quite small and thus can stay local for better performance while the actual RAW files are external.0 -
Hi, Drew--
Thanks for the reply. I'll definitely try that. My problem was that my image archive was too large for me to store its catalog on my local drive. It ended up being over 200GB in size. I was told by Tech Support that I could simply decrease the preview size of my images and that this would drastically cut down the size of the catalog, but since then I've been unable to open the software without it crashing. So, not sure what I'm going to do at this point. Still, thanks again for the tip. 😊

What types of RAW files are you using?
Are you sure this is a "referenced" Catalog?
A referenced catalog should really only be (depending on preview size and original RAW size) 10% of your total RAW image folder size (thats an approximate maximum). So, if your 150,000 images total over 2TB then the 200GB Catalog makes sense but is hard to believe. Otherwise I think it's safe to say you are not using a Referenced catalog but you are instead Copying the RAW files INSIDE of your catalog, not just keeping them on the external for reference.0 -
Hey, Drew--
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was a referenced catalog. My archive is roughly 7TB in size, so I guess it stands to reason. 😊
Of course, that doesn't mean that I didn't do something wrong when I began the catalog-creation process. Unfortunately, I have yet to get the program running again (it has crashed about two dozen times since I've tried opening it several days ago). I'm inclined not to bother any more.0
