Can I copy keywords to a new catalog?
I have followed Peter Krough's advice and am splitting the RAWs from the derivatives/converted files. Instead of having to redo all the keywords in a new catalog, can I somehow copy the words to the new catalog?

If by that you mean you are moving your raw files to a different/new catalogue and they are already annoteted, then the easiest way would be to make a new empty catalogue, then with both catalogues open select the raw images and holding the shift key down drag them to the new open catalogue. Then all the data including keywords will be transfered with them to the new catalogue, the exception being the hierarchical keyword structure. 0 -
Hello Vaughn,
why don't you just duplicate the catalog, sort by file type and then delete all the derivatives. This would keep you all the raw files.

The advise from Siegfried does work for me also. Just duplicate the catalog and remove everything you don't need. Pay attention you don't remove the media but only the entries in the database. You can use de DEL button to do this btw.
Another thing to consider is that it's wise to synchronise your keywords into the files itself. You can do this to select all files in the catalog (CTRL+A), choose 'Action' from the menubar en select the option 'Sync Annotation'. In the next screen you select the second opion 'Export annotations to Original files'. Select the first 3 fiels (see screenshot ).

I was following Peter's workflow and have separated the RAWs and the derivatives already. I have not added keywords to the derivatives yet, hoping to put them in derivative catalogs. Since the derivatives are essentially the same subject matter, it would be nice to simply start a new catalog and copy the keywords from the RAW catalog into the derivative catalog.
BTW,I've just started, but already the RAW catalog has almost 20k files in the catalog.

Don't know whether this helps, but you can extract metadata to XMP sidecar files, then if you put them in the same folder as the derivatives, the metadata will be imported with the derivative image.
Another option if the derivatives have same filenames as the RAWs is to make a copy of catalogue, use Reset Paths to point to derivatives, then rebuild all items to sync EXIF data & thumbnails.0 -

I think you've misunderstood some of the ideas in Peter's book. Yes, physically separate raw and derivatives into different folders and backup structures, but there's no real need to put them into a separate derivative catalogue.
