Can't connect 5D with Lion and 6.2.2

If we are talking about the first model of Canon 5D, that is not the mkII, issues may occur with CO Pro 6. As also noted in the release notes, this older model may or may not work due to an update version of Canon's software in CO Pro 6. CO 5 Pro should be no problem. However, for Lion (10.7.2) you need CO Pro 6.3.2 for proper operation.

Some users have reported effortless operation, some are less fortunate. Besides the software issues just mentioned, the iMac has become 'famous' for low power on USB ports, preventing stable tethering with even the newest (Canon) cameras.

Summarizing, Lion and tethering the 5D is not a fancy combination. Note that 5D raw files are still supported in CO6. iMac and tethering to Canon is not a lucky shot.

Advise: look for a USB repeater and start from there. Might do the trick.

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for the quick reply. As mentioned before, I did load 6.3.2 and the camera was not seen. And since I have 6.2.2 installed with Snow Leopard on my other machine I thought that using 6.2.2 and Lion would/might work. No such luck.

And BTW yes it's the original 5D.

I'll take your advise and get a repeater and put in between the camera and cpu and see if that works.

Also, should I go back to using 6.3.2? Is that what you're recommending with this set up? And when I do go to a 5D II (spring) will those issues be resolved or will they still haunt me?

Just wish that every one would share their coding.

    Cheers,

    Richard

    Hi Richard,

I strongly recommend for a Lion-based system to use the latest release of CO 6 as it solved some nasty Lion issues (10.7.2 in particular).
Regarding the future, I am optimistic, but that is my default setting. 😉
If you can get your 5D to tether now, I expect fewer if any problems with your 5D mkII.

You can always (to the best of my knowledge) tether using Canon EOS utilities and then use the Hot Folder feature in Capture One to facilitate communication between them.

(the above article needs to be updated but the workflow is the same)

Good thinking Drew, however Canon is currently letting their customers down with a long overdue update of EOS Utility. The current 2.10.2 will not start on Lion (it is not supported) and is not compatible with 10.6.8 either (Canon recommends NOT to use it with 10.6.8). Users have been more successful with the older 2.8.1 in these kinds of setup.

If you are going the EOS Utility route, please remind to deselect the Canon provider in the CO Pro 6 preferences to prevent conflicts/confusion between the programs over who is using the USB connection.

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for the info. I've been shooting on location so that's why I haven't responded sooner. I'll try that method over the next couple of days and see if it works.

    Thanks,

    Richard

P.S. I also replied to the cases folder.

So I went on the sites and tried to find and download 2.8.1 but got the run around. Couldn't find a link anywhere for it. Does anyone have a direct link for this ?

    Cheers,

    Richard

I'm at present testing the Pentax 645D… too bad C1 doesn't open it's PEF files, but it does open its DNGs…
Santa Klaus will have maybe an heavy parcel for me! 😊

    Joyeux Noël to everyone here!

    Hi Nicolas,

So I installed EOS 2.8.1 and went through all the steps for C1 enabling the hot folder but my camera is still not seen It still hangs when I try to capture an image.

Any thoughts? I also quit EOS 2.8.1 before enabling C1.

    Merci,

    Richard

    @ Richard
Sorry I can't help more, I almost never shoot tethered and don't have a 5D…

    @ Paul
Well Santa Klaus is a neat guy, he's just waiting to have my definitive thoughts about the Pentax 645D…
I'd love to get a Phase body and back, but it's really out of my budget… now, people from phase, if you want me to test your backs shooting boats from helicopter (as I did for the Sinar's HY6, I'm your man! 😉

Fair winds in 2012 to all of the members here, I wish you the best clients of the world !

    Salute Nicolas,

I almost always shoot tethered but that's another story.

Thanks for trying and good luck with Santa Klaus. Perhaps someone else will chime in after the Christmas festivities.

Drink lots of Bordeaux or perhaps some Champagne. Salute!

    Joyeux Noel et Bonne Anee

    Hi Drew,

Hope that you had a great Christmas.

As per my initials trials with Lion and C1 6.3.2 and trying the Hot Folder I still cannot initiate the camera. I've gone through the steps outlined, as per previous posts. I'm using a very short USB cable ( 12"} ads it still will not connect the camera. When the shops open I will get a repeater to test that also.

I've shot onto a card (as a test) and the app (C1) reads the card (great) but I need to shoot tethered when my client is there on the shoot.

I've gone through the site to see if any other circumstances apply but did not come up with anything.

I truly need this working in the New Year or will have a big paper weight on my desk and a couple of thousand bucks (invested? while Canon comes up with a solution in the New Year.

Looking forward to a response before Santa retires for the year.

    Cheers.

    Richard

Finally broke down and got a new 5D MK II. Hooked it up and voila! it works!

Sometimes wasting time or trying to initiate another hack solution doesn't pay off. Still, I hope that Canon will still get the code out for the 5D, as a back up camera.

I can confirm, Santa has been a nice guy this year!

However, I've been completely disappointed with the use of C1 with the Pentax 645D files.

So, today, I did create a support case:
Santa has been a nice guy this year!
Santa thought that I could not afford a Phase 645 together with a Phase back and lenses, but to comfort me (and make me wait?) He brought me a Pentax 645D with a few nice lens ..

But how sad when I realized that CaptureOne does not read its PEF files.
Ok, it reads the DNGs (PEF converted by the body as well as Adobe DNG).
But the image quality to which I am used by processing (with C1) my RAW files from my Canon bodies 1DS3, 5D2, Sinarback eMotion 75 LV is just not there with the files from the Pentax.

The 645D raw files out of Lightroom are gorgeous ... nice micro details, nice noise reduction, Truer colors, better clarity ... although I still Have better results with the C1 for Canon and Sinar files ...

    So my question is:
What's up C1? is this because this camera is a competitor of Phase back and bodies or did Phase just lacked of time to include the Pentax 645D in the supported cameras? And if the later is the right answer, when do you think it will be achieved?

I'll post the answer for those interested in, but I, unfortunately, doubt that Phase support reply will be a positive one…

    Hi Nicolas,

That's too bad about your situation. I believe that if C1 wants to sell their software as a stand alone (from their system) then C1 should address all the issues along with the other Companies (Canon, Pentax, et al) But the other issue is that those (other) companies should supply the SDK's to C1.

As is the case with my 5D, Canon does not, did not supply the code for the newer C1. It's a conundrum. Who do we blame? Maybe ourselves but at the same time the Companies have to take a fair share also.

C1 is an an amazing software, as long as you have a camera that is supported by them. Hmm. My 5D is now a paperweight, until Canon talks with C1. I don't care about the new features or slightly larger files because the 5D is still a bit sharper. Most of my work only gets to be printed to an A4 or 8.5"x11" at it's largest.

My original Kodak 460 could still print to 11"x17" with interpolation, but that was a CCD. Much sharper. Still have it in the box and waiting to auction it off next century to a collector so I can buy a 1,000 mg pixel 3D holographic point and shoot.

Until then maybe if other shooters want to chime in about their situations then "The Companies" might be agreeable to resolve these situations amongst themselves.

As for now, hope is our only salvation.

    Salute.

    Thanks Richard 001
Well this camera is afaik the only Pentax recent body that is not included as supported camera…

I don't blame Phase, just have lots of loads of regrets!

Anyway, below is the answer to my support case I got this morning:

    Hi - thanks for writing.

Based on your request we will add your request to our feature request list. Then it's our management group that will decide if the camera can be added to the list.

    Thanks for using Capture One
    Phase One

Let's cross fingers and I request all Pentax 645D owners to raise a support case to be added to mine!
This might increase our chances of success 😊
