Putting your despair aside, let's start doing first things first.
First: what Mac, amount of RAM and OS X are you using? Next, when CO 4.8.1 crashes, what were you doing?

I am using an 8 core G5 10 Gig of ram running OS 10.5.7 and when it crashes i can be doing anything from rotations to processing files.

I currently have 35 licenses on various Macs ranging from 8 Core G5's to 24 inch iMac and we get the same issues on all systems.

Some more tips I recorded earlier regarding fighting CO 4 crashes on Mac. In particular cleaning up the batch history might be worthwhile.

My rotate doesn't work..i can't batch process any files..It crashes all the time until i trash the prefs (again) so i have to re-do all of my settings. Some files open in Photoshop, then others don't. Canon 5D Mark 2 have stopped connecting why!!
    ...

Regarding the other issues you mentioned:
    - rotation problem: while tethering? (acknowledged; see working with Style as workaround in other thread); non-tethering (something new)
    - batch process: not sure why not. Not able to select and batch a selection? You are aware of the Edit Primary Only option? Or does a batch not process?
    - not all files open in Photoshop: noticed this too; with me it does happen when I start editing files in Photoshop during batch process
    - lost 5D Mk II connectivity: are any other programs trying to connect to the camera (check Image Capture and Canon software)
May I note that the initial poster has a lot of errors but provides very few details about them.

We have also 20 licenses on Intel 8 Core Pro Macs with 6GB Ram Mac OS X 10.5.7, and still the same problem :

    random shutdown of C1

even if we process one or more files, sometimes after a few seconds or after working for half an hour.
We try all advices from PhaseOne - deleting all setting Folders an files also clean new installation of C1 still the same problem
Now we also reduced the Memory to 2GB....

    random shutdown of C1

Now, today we Setup a complete new System on our MAC with bundled Update to OS 10.5.7 (advice from PhaseOne Support) to avoid the known Memory leak in Mac OS X 10.5
    But nothing's changed:

    [color=#BF0000:3h9irgop]

    random crashes of C1

We're in hope of a stable Version or any other satisfying solution.
