I want to use my current external HD. I don't want to use the Capture One library.

How do I just use my current external HD only? And, not start up a complete new library.

I have been use this program for one day.

MacBook Pro 8,3, 16 GB RAM, OS 10.11.6

  You need to investigate Sessions.
  
  There must be at least one session created and I would recommend you create as many as you need to have some organisation and grouping of images in a sensible form.
  
  However if you are simply wishing to process images one at a time then in a Session you can navigate to the image and and open it wherever it is.
  
  Your edit activity will be stored locally to the image and the image and the edits can be managed entirely independently of C1 if that is really what you decided to do. However you do need to understand how that works (it's not difficult, just requires understanding) to get the best out of the approach.
  
  All of that said - I would strongly suggest that you reserve your judgement about how you may finally decide to use Capture One until you have discovered more about what it offers.
