How to get Onkens look?
Hi! Im a big fan of Nick Onken. http://www.nickonken.com
He has a consistent look to all his images. They are kind of red/orange and warm. Many with blown highlights and slightly overexposed. He still manages to keep his subjects very nicely exposed and colorful.
As I know Nick uses C1 I was wondering if anyone could care to guess what in C1 Nick does to get his look. Of course he does steps in camera and Photoshop as well but my guess he spends some time in C1 and fixing colors etc before going to Photoshop.
Any hints in the direction would be helpful. I love this look on images.
Best,

1) there are so many plugins for Photoshop that make it not necessary to fix colors in C1 if you want have some specific looks - http://www.plugsandpixels.com/ezine.html - check "creative image effects" and "image enhancement" on the right side of the web page
or
2) if you want to do as much as possible in C1 and too lazy to play w/ sliders and curves yourself - get yourself a trial version of SilkyPix, get the proper taste from there : http://translate.google.com/translate?p ... ry_state0=
then open your raw file in SilkyPix, apply the taste and see what SilkyPix does - then repeat similar adjustments in C1, certainly you will not get that 1:1, but you can use that as a starting point.0 -
Thanks for the links. I do not think he uses plugins at all. I think its a matter of shoot carefully planned photos wide open at f2.0 - f2.8 to get soft look somewhat. He usually has the the sun behind subject and I suspect also having his camera set to slightly overexposed and saturated colors. Then he process his images in C1 and merely enhances his look and tweak the colors somewhat. Then in PS is suspect he does curves for contrast and perhaps some other stuff.
If anyone who has looked at his images could care to comment on how to get this look I would be grateful. Of course he is a unique talent but im just curious..0 -
Johanjagelin,
I'm up for the challenge... pick some specific shots from Oken's website and I'll do what I can to get you a style that mimicks the look.
Create a support case directed to me and we'll start playing with color.0 -
