Updating to newer version

I was wondering what would be the best way to update to a newer version? For example 8.0.1 to 8.0.2...?

Should I just drop the new version on top the older version and replace it or would it be better to delete the older version first with an app delete software and manually delete any files/folders left behind from the system and then install the newer version...?
