    Peter,

There is a menu option to open a tool in "Floating" mode. You may have done that but I suspect not - you would probably have been aware of doing so.

Some of the optional Workspaces have floating tools defined - again I suspect you would have noticed that you had instigated a change.

Most likely you inadvertently dragged the floating tool from its place in the tool selection offered under a tool tab grouping.

You can put them bag into a tool tab group by dragging them back in at the position in the list of tools that you choose for your own convenience.

You can have any tool in any tab. More or less.

If you just want to remove the tool from the screen click on the 3 dots in the top left corner of the tool window and you should see a new window open with a "Remove Tool" option. Click that and the tool will close.

If you have some other effect going on (for example empty dark grey rectangles that do not respond to anything) then a different approach may be required.

    HTH.

That worked. Thanks. Originally I hard a hard time finding the 3 dot menu because I had moved the whole window too far to the right and it was off screen. You post prompted me to slide the window further to the left and my problem was solved.
I knew there had to be an easy solution.
I am guessing that somehow I pulled the menu off the tool br as the info tool had gone away. I put a new version back, and now I have gotten rid of the redundant windows.
    Thanks for the clear explanation.

    You're welcome Peter.

These things are easily done without realising what has happened at the time and so without having any obvious way to trace back to where we started.

It's part of the power of the application. Familiarity helps a lot I find. It's all pretty consistent and in those few activities where consistency seems to be a little lacking there will almost certainly be a perfectly good explanation of the reasoning behind the approach waiting to be discovered.

Tip: reinstating the preferred workspace (Window menu > Workspace) will instantly correct all deviations you made, whether they are made conscious or not.

I regularly mess around with my workspace a lot, like using floating tools. With a simple click to my preferred workspace, am I back to normal in a blink of an eye.
