Excluding Duplicates while importing to Catalogs

    Not yet.
If you are importing to a referenced catalog, duplicates will be skipped automatically. If you are importing inside a catalog, the assumption is that you want more than one copy of the same file in the catalog.

Guys, please fix this. This is the only program so far I find does this and I found out I have imported a few photos several times. This isn't good!

    Thanks.

Ditto. At least add a checkbox or pull down in the import so we can choose to import or not import duplicates. This seems like the most rational way to handle it... This catches me OFTEN. I leave images on my cards (shooting DSLR) as a backup until I'm required to clear the cards for large events. As I add work, if I'm not careful I import lots of duplicates for no reason.

    Hi:

I have the same problem, and now I have even duplicates imports due to the fact that I had to cancel imports for several reasons.

Also, I have worked done in some of the duplicates so that I want to find a solution before having to erase imports and then importing the files I want to import. Meanwhile I have to erase one by one which will take forever (About 15,000 pictures)

I thought it would share and use the same files t files as before did, so that are in my pictures folder like LR4. When I realized it imported pictures to a different file it was late.

    Help needed here...!!!

Still no solution for this problem?

Capture One crashed while importing my Lightroom catalog... after quite some time. If I start the import again, I imports everything again - this is no feature, this is a bug.

    Make the behaviour selectable. Please...

I hope the second import will work for me now. It would be really annoying to start from scratch everytime, just because duplicates are not recognized!

I tried 4 time..... no success
if they cant fix that they should really hurry adding the check box with "Excluding Duplicates while importing"

    Again, this is by design.
A Referenced Catalog (Catalog that references files stored outside of the catalog) will skip duplicates as there is already an association to the original RAW file within the Catalog.
A Catalog where files are stored WITHIN the catalog file will, of course, follow you directions to reimport and thus duplicate the same RAW file.

If you do not want to import the same file please use a referenced catalog workflow or do not select the same file to copy INTO the catalog.

The problem with the current implementation of skipping duplicates when importing to a referenced catalog are twofold:

    1. It takes a lot of time to parse already imported images. I noticed that disabling "show panel for new events" on the Event Log speeds things up a bit, but still it takes way too much time if there's many (already imported) images in the import location.

    2. If selecting "selected album" under "Import to" - "Collection", images that are already in the catalog but not in the selected album will be added to the album even if duplicates are not imported to the catalog. This is a bit annoying and makes things even slower than under point 1 above.

    Cheers,
    Andreas

Really? This sure violates the 'principle of least surprise'. The capability to add a duplicate is great, but having it as the default?

I'm evaluating Media Pro on the 30 day trial, and have immediately run into duplicates, due to some overlap in camera downloads in the past. What's the best way to filter out duplicates once they've infected your catalog? Is there a way, like that in other tools such as iPhoto, to detect duplicates?

C'mon to call this duplicate behaviour a "feature" is silly.
You are imposing a workflow logic on us photographers that is unintuitive and pretty dangerous. Please consider the workflow of somebody who's not always shooting tethered and does not want to change his file location just for that occassion.

An example: With other programms it is very easy to recheck all memory cards after import and see if you really imported all cards. Just to make sure I regularily do this. When doing this with C1 I produce duplicates.
I am loosing time, I have to erase some files (at worst manually) and erasing carries the risk of erasing the wrong session and frames by accident.
Half of a photographer's life is checking just to make sure – and this great "feature" unneccessarily creates a real risk of losing data. Loosing time and nerves is bad enough, but if there's one thing I can't aford, it's losing data.
Is it such a huge problem for you to add an "ignore duplicates" checkbox?

Oh – and please consider an "eject card" button in the import window. Having to go to the finder to do this every time I check cards is pretty annoying, too.

I love the raw conversion of C1 and returned after almost 10 years to this product but the file handling though improved, is quite frankly a deal braker.

    Ok.
Thanks for the feedback. We'd love to see it in a support case we can forward to product managers.

I have to agree with most of what is written here
I tried to import Tif files after realizing that the workflow I expected that I so much love in LR
namely Importing RAW, doing adjustments then exporting to Photoshop
and when saving the file from there it "magically" showing up in my catalog

NONE of that here... C1 even manages to not import tif files that are clearly present (and without directly importing into the catalog) in the import folder - these just get "overlooked". When C1 is scanning the import folder it is taking ages, when I want to go and see the content by changing "import from location" it doesn't let me browse that folder at all since it is still parsing....

Slowest and most painful workflow that I have experienced - that isn't even a workflow
and I just paid for my license today

Did you not make use of the 60 day trial to work out whether the workflow suited you?

If you are happy with the LR workflow and part of that involves Photoshop what is it that leads you to buying Capture One without a thorough assessment?

I'm really curious as to understand why this sort of scenario occurs from time to time when it can be so easily avoided.
