Picture numbering LR style

    Hi,

When displaying any set of pictures in LR, it will automatically put a number "behind" each image corresponding to its sequence in the displayed set. I.e. if you have 20 pictures selected with filters, it will display each as 1...20. If you change the filtering so it only yields, say, 12 pictures they will now be numbered as 1...12. Perhaps this sounds pointless with relative numbering, but it makes it very easy to retrieve specific images when the customer is presented with a selection. For instance, I will prepare all pictures with a star rating of 3+ for the customer and export them with sequential numbering file_1.jpg, file_2.jpg etc. And when the customer tells me he wants a certain set of numbers, it is very easy to go into LR and find them back because the numbers are right "behind" each image if I just filter correctly.

How can this retrieval be easily done in C1? Any idea will be greatly appreciated as I am currently flipping back and forth between exported images and C1 till my eyes spin.

    Thanks,

    Thomas

Just have your customer send the list in clear text, then go Edit -> Select By -> Filename List, and CO will automatically select the images, your customer have chosen.

I appreciate the idea of the file list, but that would require the customer to type in the actual RAW filename which is hidden to them, as the selection pictures are exported as JPG images with a sequential counter. The workflow is like this:

    1) I shoot a number of pictures during the session (say 500 images)
    2) I import 500 images into C1, they all keep their RAW file names untouched
    3) By culling, I bring the number of candidate pictures down to, say, 50
    4) The 50 candidate pictures are exported as "customer name xxx".jpg where xxx is the sequential number
    5) Customer comes back and want, say, images 7, 15, 22, 23 and 44

As the JPG files are sequentially named from the candidate list this number does not correspond to the RAW file sequence number which I want to hide from the customer.

Of course, I could do a batch rename in C1 before exporting but again it would be a unecessary step if C1 could just tell me the number of each picture relative to the selected number of images. Does my explanation make any sense?

Nop, the numbers alone will work just fine, as long as you use leading zeros.
For me, using this is a huge time-saver.

The critical point for this to work is of course that the file sent to the customer, and your raw file matches. I usually rename the raw-files I sent to customer anyhow. This is also lot simpler, flow-wise, and will lead to fewer misunderstandings between you and your customer.

Alright, I tried it and it is very close to what I am looking for 😊 However, it needs a match between the export file name (which the customer sees) and the RAW file name (which C1 sees). Unfortunately, they cannot be matched as it would require a rename of the RAW files.

The problem in a nutshell is that the client only sees a subset of the pictures from the shoot, but I want to be able to provide the preview files to the client with sequential numbers without "gaps" as gaps only raise questions about "missing" pictures.

Any idea on how to proceed?

Here's my own flow after a shoot:

    - Rate all pictures between 1 and 2 stars, depending on how they look initally look
    - Rate all 2-star pictures for focus, using the Focus Mask overlay. All shots in focus gets 3 stars
    - Rate all 3-star pictures for how they look and work for the job. Good images get 4 stars
    - Select all 4 stars, and rename them with "Job-name" + "2 or 3 digit counter". No gaps now visible, and it is also easy to see what images can be deleted after completed job.
    - Create jpegs, and send those to the client.
    - Use the list from the Client in the Filename List selector.
    - Use color tags or mark with 5 stars what the customer have chosen.

We all work differently, feel free to use it as inspiration.

Thanks for describing your workflow; very inspirational. I will try to use that next time. 😊
