D-Lighting NEFs under exposing in Capture One
I'm experiencing pretty much the same as this old thread from 2008 which is the only one that came up on search:
viewtopic.php?f=20&t=5566&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a
The above thread seems to be a dead-end so basically I need some assistance to find if there's a workaround or adjustment for this -> the exposure of all D7000 NEF files is reduced by Capture One 6.0.1 by 1.5 to 2.5 stops, depending on the shot, if Active D-Lighting has been used. This makes it a very annoying having to increase the exposure of every image again. Is this basically Active D-Lighting underexposing and Capture One ignoring the subsequent Nikon in-camera DR processing? If so is there a workaround?

IIRC this Nikon feature (Canon has a similar trick) is not supported by Capture One. Capture One has it own tools to handle highlights and/or shadows which are out of range. The workaround is very obvious of course in that you switch of the feature in the camera. And for the exposures you already made, use the exposure slider.
Note that this D-Lighting feature is primarily designed for JPEG shooters and a proprietary solution to its manufacturer. Support in the manufacturer's raw software can be expected, but not from 3rd party software (some might support it, some not).0 -
Thanks Paul. I actually only started trying D-Lighting and assumed it applied it to the RAW files as well, so apparently not (except in Nikon's own software). I've searched elsewhere on the net and found Thom Hogan provides a similar answer as well:
"NEF shooters beware! Only Capture NX2 can apply the proper linearization curves automatically to get essentially the same effect as what the camera does for JPEGs and TIFFs. If you use another raw converter, though, consider not using Active D-Lighting."0
