unsharp mask won't apply
Hi,
I'm haveing an issue that i can't figure it out. No matter what i try, my converted JPG does not show the unsharpmask (focus) that ive set.
I'm just loading the .CR2 from my 350D through the filebrowser, apply the settings and convert the jpg. It just won't show the sharpness.
This happens with 3.7.6 and 3.7.3
Does anyone know what's wrong?
Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
Check if Disable Sharpening On Output is checked in File -> Preferences -> Process settings

Hi,
It's not checked, so not disabled.0 -
Well,
you need to explain how you measure the "does not show sharpness". Sharpness is a subjective measure that cannot be discussed based on 1 sampling, you need something to compare it to...
judging sharpness should be done at 100% magnification
I'd suggest exporting to TIFF and to highest quality JPEG and comparing 100% crops with the 100% preview in C1. Note that JPG might show compression artifacts and reduce the effect applied
Hope this makes sense,

vazaha,
If you have 3.7.3 and 3.7.6 on the same machine, this could be the problem.
We always suggest having only the most current version installed on a machine. There can be conflicts with older versions.
When multiple versions are on a machine, we advise a Complete Uninstall and Clean Install.
Knowledge Base article # 1665 instructions for Uninstall:

If you are setting Sharpening with the Focus tab sliders, and your Preferences setting has not disabled Sharpening, then absolutely and positively Sharpening is being applied to this image.
If not using the sliders, then the values set at Preferences > Miscellaneous Settings > Default Sharpening are applied.
What are your settings?
Compare with the Focus View dispay for best comparison.
And absolute best analysis of sharpening is with the printed image.

I have only one version installed at the moment.

Here's what i do on this particular picture
1. Set White Balance to Tungsten (This is visible after the conversion!)
2. Set Focus (+248 +26, camera default)
3. apply settings (all selected)
4. process -> process the selected captures
5. the processed selection is opened by windows viewer: see screenshot
i think its plain visible that the sharpness level on capture one is not visible on the processed JPG0 -
vazaha,
At the Focus tab it is best analyze the Focus View Display image and not the Preview image.
The Preview will show sharpening adjustments, but is too low in resolution for making critical decisions, even at full screen. The Focus View actually processes that portion of the RAW for display and analyses.
Soft look setting is used primarily for close-up portrait work because it hides skin blemishes to some extent. Standard look is the other option available.
Amount - how much contrast between pixels
Threshold - the higher the # the LESS that is sharpened in the image
In analyzing sharpening effects only, do not adjust Color Noise suppression sliders since these can have an affect upon sharpening.
And as alipatov states, 100% is best.
In general what you See or Don't See at 100% will be the same in printed image.
Hope this helps you out.
Cheers,
k c0 -
Keith, no matter what sharpening level i use (even with everything to the max), the output remains untoched by the sharpening.. 0 -
The threshold at max will sharpen almost no pixels. Try, Standard Look, Amount at max and Threshold at min. You should get an image full of ringing artifacts. 0 -

I thing it needs to be stressed again - the amount of sharpnening should be judged only at 100%
What you see is -
- In C1 the small preview is sharpened - the effect is simulated on a smaller version an appear much sharper that it will be if you resize the final image
- In Windows Viewer the large image is downsized and no sharpening applied to the result
When viewing the photo at only 25% you're loosing all that sharpening due to downsizing
On another note, Sharpening in C1 is only the "capture sharpening" and should be minimal - enough to bring the details out (unless you're not post-processing the images and sharpening for printing in C1 - but then only the printed image will tell you if you sharpened enough)
When you resize the photos for web, for example, you will have to sharpen them again
