Spinning wheel while changing preferences

I have a 5D Mark II and OS 10.5.8. I have no problem so far tethering the camera and taking captures but while I am in preferences and clicking between each of the preference choices I get the spinning wheel and it will not stop unless I force quit the software. Then upon restarting the software it does not recognize the session I had going before I force quit even though the folder is still on the desktop and the captures are in the capture folder.

Anyone else experience this and is there a remedy?

  Preferences crashing on me too. Just had it crash 3x while in prefs.
