    And have you tried playing with the radius and sensitivity sliders in the Luma mask tool? Also I have found in the past that in tricky images that need some clarity it can be worth experimenting with one of the older clarity methods. You get different results, but sometimes I have found that I have avoided haloing that way.

    You could apply a luminosity mask to the image and play with the controls to get it suitably feathered, then apply the clarity to the masked area. Or draw your mask the old-fashioned way, perhaps using the auto-mask feature if the edge you want to draw up to will work well with that, then use the refine mask and feather mask controls to get an adequately accurate but soft edge to the mask, then apply the clarity.
