I stay in browser mode and hit apple T to hide the tools palette. Almost everything I look at is vertical so I have the thumbnails place on the right and then it doesn't disturb the main image size. If it's horizontal it's just apple shift R I think to place them at the bottom.

CMD + T and then CMD + B hides both tools tabs and browser window - effectively a Viewer! Works a treat.

80% of the time I am using 2 monitors - even on location - so the 2nd monitor gets the viewer and the monitor is rotated horizontally or vertically depending on the image final use.

I kind of agree with the OP that Aperture and others are more intuitive here. In Aperture, you simply hit "V" repeatedly and it toggles you through 3 view modes (browser, image with browser strip, image only) and it's much better IMHO than a cmd key requirement and two different ones at that. It would be nice to be able to choose a "toggle key" (pick a letter, any letter) that lets you rotate through views.

I suppose that hitting two keys might take a little longer but the benefits of using capture one instead of Aperture / LR5 far outweighs for 90% of the shoots I digi on. Once you use it every day and you have set up your own shortcuts etc it all flows very nicely!
