Trying to understand previews
Can someone please help me understand what previews are and what they do. I am using C1 7.0.1 and sessions not catalogs. If I import raw files, C1 shows the count for the number of images it has imported and the number of previews it has generated. What the previews are for I am not sure. I know that the default preview size has changed in C1 v7 and that I can alter this in preferences if I want (but I am not sure that I know what the effect of that is).
Is the picture I see in the viewer the preview, or the image? I am using a fairly large screen (a 27 inch iMac) with a 2560 x 1440 resolution. I estimate that the long edge of a landscape picture at zoom to fit takes up about 1865 px.
I have read the discussion at about pictures at zoom to fit size not showing some adjustments such as chromatic aberration and noise reduction, and I am certainly finding that I can only see a difference from using noise reduction if I zoom to 100%. At zoom to fit size the pictures I am concerned with still look just as noisy. There was advice there in a reply from Lionel12 on Dec 05 about changing the preview size to 1024 and regenerating previews, but I can't see any difference in the appearance of the noise in the photo if I do that.
So all in all, I would be grateful for any help in understanding previews generally and what differences it would make to change the preview size.

The preview.
All adjustments you make in CO are applied to the preview until you hit the process/export button.
The best preview size is no rocket science, not a rule written in stone. CO 7 will work with any preview size. Do you need frequent zooming in, select a larger preview size.
Rule of thumb I use is that I like to be able to display the preview full size on my monitor. Hence, I select that size in the preferences.
Any information you need beyond the preview size make CO 7 go back to the raw file and generate the information, which may slow down your workflow.
Note that the larger preview size in CO7 versus previous versions come from the prerequisite of being able to zoom in with catalog images that are offline (no access to raw file).0 -
Thanks, Paul, that does help explain it.
And what about the issue of corrections such as noise reduction not showing? Why would the preview size affect that as suggested by the other thread I linked to?
