Printing Problems.
I have a number of problems using the printing module in Capture One 8 some of which I have worked around and one which is difficult to solve and I need help with.
First my setup is Windows 8.1 PC with i7-3820 CPU, 32gig RAM, AMD 5770 graphics card and NEC MultiSync PA241W monitor. The whole setup is correctly colour managed. My printer is a Canon Pixma Pro-100 for which I have both standard and XPS drivers. At the moment I am using PermaJet Oyster A3+ paper with the manufacturers ICC profile for the Pro-100 printer.
Problem 1: The output layout does not match that set in print driver. I am using A3+ paper cut in half (330mmx241.5mm) and set up custom paper size in the capture one 8 print module. However after wasting 2 sheets of paper it became obvious that something was wrong. Despite setting the printer driver parameters including custom paper size in Capture One when I pressed the final print button the print driver had reset to the default driver settings (A4 as it happens). I have met this problem before in another program with a different printer but the cure is the same. You must set the printer driver parameters you want to use not in Capture One but by left clicking the printer in Control Panel/Devices and Printers, selecting Printing Preferences and setting everything up there. This works but is far from ideal.
Problem 2: The prints are at least a stop to dark. This is very annoying as the colours are spot on correct, just far to dark. Capture One is not alone in this, Lightroom now has a lighter/darker slider in the print module to get round this problem. Now I note that the Canon printer driver has Manual Color Adjustment/Colour Adjustment Brighness Intensity and Contrast controls but I have not touched these as the ICC profile was presumably generated with these zeroed. Has anyone used these controls? Do they solve the to dark prblem? Are there any other workrounds for to dark prints?

I think I may have solved my to dark problem, setting Brightness to Light in the color adjustment panel of the printer driver lightens the print to an acceptable level without seemingly affecting the colours (other than lightening them) 0 -
Davis,
FWIW I have an older and smaller Canon printer (6600D) and that seems to work well with C1 (but of course only goes to A4 so I can't comment on the larger paper observations.
However setting or resetting the printer default values does seem to be a mite challenging as you have fouond.
On the other hand using the printer with another RAW converter application is almost impossible with all settings and orientations selections seemingly arrived at entirely by random chance and colours potentially erratic unless one lets the printer handle them. Against that background I have been delighted with the C1 results!
Both applications seem to want multiple instructions to "Print" before they do anything and if you go back through the sequence for some reason, perhaps unknowingly, before finally sending the print to the printer the interface may well re-read the unmodified defaults one more. This is true for both applications.
Updating the driver over the years, including installing the somewhat different interface for the seemingly almost identical 6700D, has made no difference. I would love to try an A3 printer but I don't have the space for one and if the interface continues to be as erratic as you have experienced the ink costs involved for irregular printing - i.e. many cleaning cycles for intermittent use - would probably be even more prohibitive than for my current device.
Maybe I should get a new printer for client output but proof and experiment using the old one with compatible inks.
Whether the other manufacturer offerings have similar problems I have no idea.
