My experience: Aperture to C1 and more !
Hi,
I’m a beginner of C1 since I decided to go from Aperture to C1 15 days ago, and hope that I’ll find out a great soft to treat my photos and catalog them. Just, sorry for my english, I’m a french guy…
I run C1 on a macbook pro 13 retina, early 2015 with 8 go. C1 is still a trial version. What I want to do is sharing my (short) experience and how convert an Aperture library to a C1 catalog and pb I (have to) resolve for that.
First I imported the Aperture library from C1 with the simple yet comprehensive Library import option. The files are referenced in catalog to the original Aperture library. This operation is quite quick, or it seems…
Afterward I moved all of my pictures and videos to the C1 catalog: about 15000 pictures and 500 videos. It takes a while, about 2 hours. But as you think it’s ok, C1 generate preview of each picture without any indicator. It lasts few hours and maybe more, and this time the computer is very slow with the spinning wheel often play. Once the mac freezed too long (half an hour), and I forced quit C1. The catalog was permanently corrupted ! No way to fix it. Have to re import the Aperture library another time.
When the import was ok. I played a lot with C1 to test it, and particularly projects, albums and groups to organise the catalog. All the time C1 is very very slow, with lot of freezes and the spinning wheel. A similar post:
Another one:
As I wanted to run an productive C1, I noticed that the organisation of my catalog was quite a mess. The reason is Aperture is organized with projects first, then albums, and folders to group all of them. Or it seems different with C1: an album is attached of each project. 2 hundred projects make up my catalog. So I re organized with albums and removed the projects. It takes a long time and you have to be careful with a bug. Catalog verification is essential:
I really think that C1 became more reactive as I removed projects. To be confirmed…
However, I’m very disappointed by C1 comportment: impossible to view all pictures in nested group !, as Aperture did. A reason for that ? Next update feature ?
By the way, is anyone know how to be sure than pictures on catalog are into any project or album ? No post about that. Next update feature ?
C1 get quicker but not enough too. Next step was to organise my keywords library, cause I got my old Aperture ones, but without any hierarchy. C1 offers hierarchal keyword. It works but… The mainly problem is C1 import keywords from Aperture, pictures and videos, but can only read videos keywords and not modify them. So a keyword won’t become a hierarchal keyword since he’s attached to a video. And as you can't modify or remove one on a video, there’s no way. Solution is to remove all the videos from C1, retreat with Aperture (remove keyword) and re-import all of these. Few hours needed…
Another thing about videos, I don’t know why C1 doesn’t read date from metadata…, as Aperture did. It’s really boring, for a clean catalog. Next update feature ?
So after treat my 500 photos (remove keywords), my keyword library was well organized. As C1 run quicker but still freezes for seconds sometimes, all of my videos were imported as referenced files to an external HD. And in the end, C1 is going reactive. YEAH !
It seems that there’s a largest problem with bad leaking memory as reported there:

I don’t know if it's in relation to version 9.0.3 or retina macbook and iMac. Next update feature ? 😉
By way of conclusion, some troubles occurred. But don’t think my words are just pessimists. Im am very glad to discover the powerful of C1. And I’m sure than C1 in one of the best soft to treat yours favorite pictures. Quality is in.
Professionals must rely on C1. Version 9 is too young for that, specially for particular configuration. Price is expansive and before buy it, I need to take comfort it’s the best choice for me.

There is no really good news on this. However, in addition to the link posted by Reelon, you may find the Image Alchemist site run by Paul Steunebrink will help with advice on importing and organising your images once imported. If you have decided to have a Catalog based library rather than a Sessions based one, this page on Paul's site would be a good place to start: https://imagealchemist.net/catalogs-in-depth-part-1/0 -
There are webinars in French now, too: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... h3_L_uZQAI 0
