Create a support request here: https://www.phaseone.com/SupportMain.aspx and the guys will get you taken care of. Unless it's a holiday, they will typically respond within 24hrs (usually less).

Capture one is a resource intensive application. If you aren't working on a solid state drive, then I cannot recommend this upgrade enough. Not only will it speed up Capture One in general, your computer will feel new again. That said, make sure you've got enough RAM (8GB just isn't enough these days), you are importing images directly on to the SSD (not to an external drive) and that you're card reader is appropriate (USB 3.0) for the volume of work you're doing. This is basic computer optimization stuff, not specific to Capture One really.

This is one I haven't seen before, but likely what you'll want to do is get the toolbars, tabs & windows set up how you like them, and then save that as a Workspace (Window -> Save Workspace). Capture One SHOULD maintain the window layout state it was in when it was last exited, so I couldn't tell you why it isn't, but at least creating a custom workspace for yourself will make it trivial to revert to the layout you like.

4-My most important problem is workflow or more precisely managing my images. I take lots of photos and this with #2 mean that I can't simply use CP1 for rating my photos out of camera. I do that with a homegrown program and it takes me longer than it should. I then copy the highly rated photos to a special partition on a network drive. But this starts another problem. I have no idea how to organize the images into folders to be suitable for use with CP1.

Workflow is a very personal thing and there isn't a single right/wrong solution, but what I can tell you is that Capture One, like nearly all of it's competitors (Lightroom, Aperture, iPhoto etc etc) are not designed to be used over a network drive. This isn't a new thing.

Typically a commercial workflow would be to create a new session on your local SSD, do all of your culling/processing and when you're done with the project, move that session folder to whatever external/network location you intend to keep it on for long term storage.

You'll need to figure out what works for you, but for performance reasons, I cannot strongly enough recommend that you are working with your files on a local drive until you're ready for archiving.

I can make a catalog for every single shoot but this way I loose the "big picture". Also I don't know how to "retire" a photo I've edited from a catalog and mark it done so that I can only see the photos that need to be edited. Various problems arise here. For example working with a dynamical folder, one to which new photos are periodically added and the old ones removed doesn't seem to be feasible with CP1.

This is another "everyone's workflow is different" situation. Personally I'll mark things that are "done" with a color tag - and then use a smart filter to show me images that don't have that color tag applied. Nothing fancy.

5-For the photos I take with the Nikon 50mm 1.8G lens, the distortion is not corrected automatically or more precisely the image CP1 shows has some distortion compared to the out of camera JPG. (I have the same problem with the photos from my RX100 I camera.)

This is another question for tech support, but it mostly boils down to lens/camera correction profiles. These are all custom created at Phase One development, and they just may not have a profile for the camera/lens combo you're using here. Regardless you might look into creating your own correction using the lens correction tool and saving that as a preset so you can bulk apply it later, and also look into the LCC tool.

    Good luck!

    Why is that?

I can't speak for the developers, but as a former IT professional my suspicion is that it's simply adding a serious bottleneck to the workflow.

Even the fastest network connection is going to allow for a significantly slower throughput than a locally attached external drive, or an internal drive. When it comes to RAW processing, that data transfer rate can be a huge deal in terms of performance - It's one of the reasons that it is strongly recommended that when shooting tethered we write to an internal SSD drive (for example).

Not only is it a serious bottleneck, but my understanding is that it is a very bad method of working, when one uses a network drive to work on directly, due to the fact that a file need to be checked out (if the software is designed that way) so that two people can't accidentally work on the same image at the same. My understanding (from this being discussed at the photomechanic forum by the developer) is that this could corrupt the file. They are working on a network based solution which required the use of a sql database, and must be very difficult to implement due to the years that this has been worked on. Three years now, I think.
