Media view in a seperate window, Dual screen vs Light table
As I try and continue to use MPro there are features I think are "no-brainers", and some are already there, just knowing how to access them.
One of them is the need to move the Media view to a second screen. This helps see the thumbs on one side, while selecting it shows them in the Media view.
Maybe this is something the light table is supposed to do, but I notice the light table doesn't really have control over the actual image file, and only reading the MPro rendered file. So it makes no difference to try and zoom in to view things.
I thought one of the views should at least tap into the original file to view the full zoom view when needed.
If there is even a link to a tutorial explaining this I would appreciate it, as I don't remember watching it.

It looks like light table does zoom into the actual image at 100% zoom.
It is also a sizable separate window. so that takes care of that.
This didn't work at some point and was enlarging the catalog file. But is A-OK now.0 -

But it is just too slow (for me) to deal with any reasonable # of files.
The rendering speed is very slow for my raw files.0 -
I fully agree. and the reason I fall back on ACDSee Pro 4.
I am very happy with it. Limited to single user approach so far, but v5, might change that.
Once they do that, I would take it over this and IDimager0 -
If only ACDSee Pro 4 would allow full customization under each image in thumbnail view - I'd jump on board. I am kinda tired of the issues I have with Idiamger and Media Pro is no where near ready for prime time. IMatch NG is in vaporland ... amazing that there is such a lack of quality DAM products on the market now... Picasa could take over if only Google gave it the attention it deserves and tied in more advanced features. 0 -
Offtopic but i'm very curious about the issues with IDimager. It's the DAM i'm considering to switch to...

I also tried IDimager. It is a good program but also has some glitches, and just over all a bit "clunky" as you move around and the interface is rather complex.
How do you mean "Full customization in thumbnail under each image? Do you mean the info you can show? (as it can do that).
I was looking to be able to filter a folder with file type, and that I don't see. It might be there, but not under Filters.
I have to hand it to ACDSee for being around for so long and they have made it much more solid, and EASY LOGICAL layout interface, with ALL the file types rendering with NO issues (PDF needs a ghostscript install8.53 and it works). I do wish it had support for InDesign, but I can live without it. If you regularly make derivatives, and you want to manage them instead of the DAM coming up with ways that it thinks is "better" You will love ACDSee simple approach. I just wish to filter within folder by file type, AND make the catalogs portable and network friendly (there is some work around for it, but unsure).
I almost forgot the Print feature on it...very handy, although I hardly use it, but when in need it works and nice contact sheet abilities.0 -
Raffi: I see that Pro4 can allow you choose what items you'd like to display under your thumbs... but it is limited to one item per line with no customization. The beauty of Idimager is it allows a full HTML style editor to let you choose exactly what to display - different font colors and sizes and the most important part - multiple items per line. Perhaps this isn't needed much as you can see most of this information in other panels - but I like to see this info under the thumbs at a glance and like the fact idimager gives you this flexibility. Of course, as you mentioned, this comes with a price - speed.
I find the program is still a bit slow at times.. thumbnail creation/redrawing seems to take a bit of processing time and loading up images is still slower than I'd like.
But - the program is fully developed, supported and very well rounded... lots of scripting/searching functionality, etc. It is pretty much the #1 DAM software in my book - for pure DAM functionality. It also has an ok editor built in (non-destructive recipe style).. but honestly don't put too much stock in it as I prefer to just use Photoshop.
Another nice feature - versioning - the ability to tie multiple copies of the same image together (ie: NEF, DNG and JPG). Its a great feature but again, kinda clunky to use.. seems like many items in the software work well - but are just not 100% intuitive or user friendly.
In any event.. I highly recommend giving it a shot.. takes a bit of getting to used to but it is a solid application once you get it going. Hopefully, V6 will change things up to be more user friendly, quicker still but maintain the power and flexibility.
BTW: I'm just a user... no affliation and not trying to sell anyone on anything here.. 😊0 -
I think that Info below the thumbs should be well thought out as I use it as you do....And I think you missed the Options(underTool), and File List, Thumbnail Info/Choose Thumbnail Info.....can be customized as you wish.
One other waste of space I thought MPro can improve on. i.e the line for color is mostly short (RGB, and it is a waste of space to drop to the next line for such info! at least a date would be nice, or extension,
I have downloaded IDimager and I liked it. But the GUI and speed and ease of use of ACDSeePro4 is superb. IDi a bit choppy.
Looks like you didn't try the Batch Editor(not RAW) in Pro4...Once you do you won't need Photoshop for resize and rename or any basic function as it handles a lot within, and the single panel makes it all so simple and very user friendly.
What really sucks about Pro4 is that Pro5 just got released and it has almost ZERO management features added..Only color lables (rather nice), and complete metadata wipe without altering the file.0 -
fyi, yes I had DLed iDimager a couple weeks ago, and almost made the purchase.
But since I also purchased Media Pro and I have purchased ACDSee Pro4, and ACDSee manager 12. (I use one to make varients, sort and org, while the other on the office manager machine to send files to clients and browse.
ACDSee Manager was on sale for $29, and likely the best you could spend $29 for a DAM.
Either way, Yes I liked it a lot, and I did see the speed a bit slow, and the interface a bit congested with a bit needing of organizing, and streamlining functions in one area. So the EASE of ACDSee, the price, the stability has kept me using it. Honetly, I have not yet seen better for my needs. Shame they are not working on the Manage side, rather beefing up a lame raw developer. But I hope v6 will do the networking, and proper cataloging.
I will give it another go, and use it again.
Often during work, one hang up can turn you off, which is not just. So continued use over some time invested is the right way to make a decision on something that you will make your "Window to Work".0
