B for brush shortcut

Sometimes keyboard shortcut B and E just give me a beep (iMac) instead of the brush tool and sometimes M to switch mask visibility dose the same thing - there must be a simple answer but I can't see what is wrong. Other keyboard shortcuts working fine.
Any ideas?

    - just checked and the shortcuts don't exist - They did yesterday so not sure how they were deleted - I certainly didn't do it voluntarily.
