Import Catalog AFTER Import Images
I have the 30-Day trial of C1 11 as I look for alternatives to Lightroom. Still learning as I go.
I imported all of my 2017 images using the Import Images feature leaving them located where they reside from their initial import into LR. I would now like to import the LR Catalog. What issues will I have with those images that are already in C1? I know I can select not to import duplicates. Are there any other issues I should be aware of?
Thanks in advance.

Maybe I'm missing something, but if you already imported your pictures, what would be the point of importing your LR catalog? 0 -
I have only imported my 2017 photo images. My LR catalog contains photos dating back to 2008. Plus, I am not sure if importing just the images brings in all data. I have about 200 photos in the 2017 images that contain a particular keyword. When I attempt to do a search based on this keyword or create a smart album based on this keyword nothing appears. It is also not in the list of keywords though I do see keywords for others.
Others have ratings - stars, colors, and those don't seem to be coming over. I know C1 doesn't bring over all data related to LR imported images but I thought I read that these type items do come over. And, I do see some of them. I thought doing the catalog would move them over.0 -
You can go one of two ways (IMHO:-)
1) start over
Just create a new C1 catalogue and import the LR catalogue.
2) bring all your earlier photos into the current C1 catalogue you already have
In that case in LR export a new catalogue with all photos from earlier years in it - leaving out 2017.
You might find an earlier thread that I responded to helpful: viewtopic.php?f=52&t=27207#p1306220 -
Thanks IanL!
That was the sort of advise I was looking for. Since I am still in the free trial mode if I decide to take the plunge I think I will choose your "Start Over" option and create a new C1 catalog and import the LR catalog.
I read your other response (thanks for the link). Being new to the forum I guess I didn't perform the correct search as i tried to find topics on the same material but failed.
From what I gather in that posting if my LR catalog structure is, parent folder - 2017 and with child folders - 2017/MM/DD, I should see that layout in the C1, as well. Having only brought the 2017 image folders over I have no parent level currently. Is that correct?
Thanks again,

I am pretty new here too - my trial would have ended this week had I not already decided to buy. [quote="mak65" wrote:

Yes that is correct and that is the format I personally use as well.
The biggest difference between C1 and LR with a folder structure like that is in LR I frequently would select the top level year folder and see all the pictures for that year and then filter from there. C1 does not do that - and it is something that is frequently requested. Instead you have to use smart collections as a starting point for that type of filter.
I am experimenting on a work flow that takes advantage of the fact that C1 does not show the contents of sub folders when a parent folder is selected. Here is what I am trying out with a current shoot and will try again for my next one. This is inspired by my investigation into Media Pro - which I have decided not to buy since it is so far out of sync with C1. At any rate, what I am doing to do is work with a C1 session to do the initial work on my photos but with a twist: the session will be hosted in the folder <drive>/2018/2018-01-27 <shoot name> with the Capture folder in a sub folder but with the Selects folder set to '.'. Which means once I am done my initial keywording, rating and editing I can pick my selects and move them to the selects folder I will have:
<drive>/2018/2018-01-27 <shoot name>/ -> will have my best images
<drive>/2018/2018-01-27 <shoot name>/Capture -> with all the rest of the lower rated images
All of which means that once the session is imported into the catalogue the root folder for the shoot will show me my best images without any further filtering. If I want to look at the also rans I can still get them by selecting the Capture sub folder but the top level shoot will show me the number of keepers.
My thought is that seeing the number of keepers net to my shoot folders will be more meaningful than the total number of shots I took - which is what LR shows.0 -
Seeing that you are relatively new to C1 I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. You have made me lean even further towards going to C1 permanently.
Thanks again
