Export confusion
I have been trying to expand my very limited knowledge of CaptureOne and have been asking questions on this forum. Fortunately for me there are a lot of very knowledgable people reading and responding and I have learned a great deal. A great deal, but apparently not enough.
I set up an export recipe for processing my raw images. As part of that recipe I specified what I thought was the location for the output jpgs being processed and did that by setting the Store Files entry in the Output Location tab. I expected that the output files would be stored in the Store Files location but, much to my surprise, they were placed in the folder containing my raw images that were being processed. Perhaps someone could let me know what I am doing wrong.
I wanted to include a screen shot of the recipe in this post but I cannot seem to figure out how to upload the image. I tried copying the screen-shot and pasting it into the post but that did not work (I got the name of the screen shot file). I tried loading the screen shot into PS, selecting and copying but when I tried to paste it into this email I got nothing. I tried using the Img button and I tried using the URL but neither worked and I cannot seem to find an upload location for images. Perhaps this forum is not designed for uploaded images?
Thanks.

Hi MikeFromMe
If I understand your problem right, you need to set the following properties:
Process Recipe Tool, File tab, Root folder = "Output Folder"
Output location Tool, Store files = (select your folder)
You most probably have Root folder set to "Image Folder".0 -

The first thing I need to say is that you are correct. My Root folder was set to Image Folder.
What I wanted to do was to have CO write the output jpgs to a subfolder of the raw folder so I set Root to Image Folder and Output folder to a folder I created under the Root folder. Not only did that not work but, for some reason, CO stopped processing my images. I would click Process, the little busy wheel would start spinning and nothing would happen. After about 2 seconds the wheel disappeared and none of my images were processed and written out. At least not to anywhere I could find. After reading your post I changed the Root folder specification but the software is still not writing the processed images.
Since there are lots of ways to process using CO let me tell you what I have done. First, since my raw images already exist on disc I did not want to import them and thereby create a second set of raw images. I am working on a MBP and my solid state memory is limited, so I changed to Sessions, no longer import but browse to the already existing location of my raw images. I then go through all of them adjusting as needed and then select the Process button at the bottom of my selected (and active) recipe. But, as I said, something that I did caused CO to stop actually processing any images and I now can only process them by right-clicking, selecting Export and then manually adjusting the settings in the drop-down window.
Before I "fixed" things by playing around with the Root folder and Store Files location my processing was working although it was not writing the jpgs to the location I thought I was telling it to use. I have the feeling that if I "fix" my settings any more I will not be able to boot the Mac. 😄
Perhaps I should return to catalog instead of using Sessions. Perhaps I just need to set the Root folder and Output Location to the proper settings. What I really wanted to do was to have CO automatically write the processed images to a fixed sub-folder of my input folder as that is what I used to do in Dxo. There you could specify that the root is the currently used folder for images and tell the software to automatically write the outputs to a sub-folder of that. Once you do that, changing the input folder automatically changes the output folder.
Any help would be appreciated. I actually tried to figure this out by reading the manual but did not have any real luck as the interplay between the varying settings did not get explained clearly; at least not clearly enough for me to understand.0 -
Hi again
I run into both problems you mentioning here.
- Closing Capture One and reopening it with the same session solved my "no processing my images" problem.
- Exporting some selected images into a subfolder of my image folder is done by:
Process recipe tool, file tab: Root folder = Image folder & Sub name = "" & Sub folder = "output"
Change output to any folder name you're used to.
Being new to Capture One, I have to admit, that the export feature is pretty powerful, but lacks some documentation. Just select some images and run through all the options might give you some idea. Well... if processing / exporting is not stuck somehow (see issue above) :-)0 -

Exactly right. Thanks again. That seems to have solved all of my (current) problems.0 -
Assuming the process is much the same for Mac as for Windows ...
The Process is actioned by a background job. If for some reason the background job is not running Process will not work.
The process job can be stopped. (Icon with 3 gear wheels). A running batch can be stopped or paused. It is worth checking whether this might be the case.
Restarting C1 will automatically restart the background process.
For sessions (I can't comment on Catalogs) each session will be created with a folder called Output. This will be the default root folder for all ouput in the session unless you change it. However if you do change it - for example to another session's Output folder perhaps inadvertently - you won't see the other session name unless you go looking for it. I assume Mac is the same as Windows (more or less) in this respect.
You can point to a different folder if you wish and make that "Root".
Subfolders can be auto created by using the subfolder option. If an existing subfolder name under the root folder is entered the files will be sent there. You can also create a new folder (perhaps under the current root folder) and send the output for a specific recipe to that location.
The Process recipe options are very powerful but may take a bit of time to make them familiar in use and I think that it is always worth checking exactly what you are going get before you set off to process a batch.
That said if you output to the wrong place it's not usually too difficult to select the files that have been created and move them to the correct folder. It's just better if you don't have to do it.
HTH.
