A warning to Mini users about OpenCL with CO-9
I recently bought a 2015 Mini to replace my aging MacBook Pro. I mostly use it for editing photos and so I configured it as well as I could (i7 chip, 16GB RAM, 256GB ssd) and, because it was new, it came with El Capitan. Mostly this machine works well enough and I have not seen much of a delay when processing photos. But the Mini has no separate video card and it has had a series of problems when the CO Preferences were set so as to use OpenCL.
Sometimes, when editing, the image would go completely black when I was making an adjustment. I first thought that this was related to the color masking functionality as that is when I initially saw this, but more testing showed it also occurred when just doing normal editing. I finally solved that problem by turning the OpenCL Display setting to Never.
When I began processing large numbers of images from raw to jpg I noticed that some of them were completely black. These first seemed to be those that were most heavily cropped, but further processing showed that even normally sized images occasionally came out completely black. I solved this by turn the OpenCL Processing setting to Never.
I am assuming that all of this is because the Mini does not have its own graphics card and instead is using Intel Iris graphics. In any case I wanted to warn anyone using a new Mini that they might want to save themselves some trouble by just turning the OpenCL settings to Never. I am not sure that this applies to those using the 2012 Minis with the quad core i7 chips, but for more recent Minis it might save some people some heartache to just turn OpenCL off.
I have not seen this issue with version 8.

Sure enough, I don’t have this problem using Capture One Pro 9 on a Late 2012 Quad Core i7 Mac Mini with Intel HD Graphics 4000. My OpenCL preferences are set to “Autoâ€. 0 -

Thanks for the post. I suspected that this might have to do with the hobbled nature of the recent Minis with their dual core chips. It could also be due to the change from HD Graphics 4000 to Intel Iris Graphics.
I have this problem with version 9 whenever I change from Never to Auto. Not all the time, but just enough to be truly annoying. Fortunately I neither see this issue with the OpenCL settings at Never or notice any real slow down in processing.0 -
Honestly, two cores is plenty most of the time. My guess is it all comes down to that GPU. 0 -

The thing that puzzles me the most is why this is happening with CO-9 and not with CO-8. I have both of them on my Mini and 8 works fine with OpenCL turned on. Version 9 works sometimes, gives me black screens at other time with OpenCL turned on, works without any problem with it turned off.
Something that CO has done with version 9 is showing this problem. None of my other photo editing software has displayed this problem.0 -

I also have a 2012 Mac Mini with COP9 and see no issues regarding OpenCL.0 -

I submitted a bug report concerning this but the C1 folks closed it without so much as a "thank you very much". No response as to whether or not they intend to fix it. As I mentioned I do not have this problem with version 8 so it must be some new code in version 9.0 -
