If you have the free V8 Express for Sony then you have "lite" version which is Catalogs only.

You can update that for a small upgrade cost to Pro for Sony which will give you V8 Pro in line with but improved since your V7 Pro BUT supporting only Sony cameras.

If you want more than Sony cameras you can upgrade from V7 Pro to V8 Pro for a reasonable upgrade cost. That might be your best route if you have non-Sony files in your collection.

If you have downloaded the V8 application (but not yet licenced it) so long as you avoid the DB (Digital Back) option you should be able to trial the Sony versions and the full Pro version for up to 30 days alongside your V7 installation. It would be a good way to recover your sanity! 😉

However bear in mind that each version other than the full Pro has some constraints (see above) so don't allow yourself to become frustrated further buy trying things entirely randomly and without at least some basic planning to test for your requirements.

    HTH.

Thanks Grant .. I`m waiting for V9 for the full Pro upgrade as V8 is about at the end of its life cycle (going by past versions) , Sony was a means of getting A7R2 support now , so will Sony-Pro allow each section to remember default settings per camera and work in Sessions ? ..

Yes. The Sony Pro version is a full CO pro, but works only with Sony files.

Hi, I already own Capture One 8.3 Pro version and a new A7R2.
I presume that there's no difference between CO Pro and what you name "Sony Pro", but correct me if I'm wrong.
(i.e. does not have further specifications just for Sony.)

    Hi,
as far as I'm aware the funcionality of the full Pro and Sony Pro versions are the same but not the supported camera models. So no concern if you own Sony camera models only (better to check the list though for older models).

The Pro (for Sony) is like the full Pro but limited to Sony cameras (raw files and tethering). See the release notes for details.

Note that the digital backs that the DB version supports are also supported (both raw and tether). This is not in the release notes but from my experience (at the raw file support). You can check this by running a trial as Pro (for Sony) on your existing copy. I also noticed TIFF and JPEG support in the Pro (for Sony) for import, editing and export, in contrast to the DB version.

Hokay, so Can capture one 8 Pro (Sony or otherwise) operate like Version 7 Pro in that I can remember Default settings such as NR , Sharpness defaults per camera ? . this Is mega important (in fact I`m happy to do it globally even) as it saves loads of workload time .

    The Bottom line is -->
All I want C1 to do is recognise a folder full of RAW files and develop them using defaults of no Noise reduction and sharpness set to V3.7 Soft -- (preferably developed on using Ctrl-D per file) into another folder - the RAWs are deleted off the Computer and archived to DVDs and stored on spindles if they`re work (for future use if needed) or just deleted if not . I don`t want complications with catalogs, importing exporting and all that Faff , just want to do what I`ve done since Pro V3.0 ......

V8 Sony Express gets in the way of that as annoyingly as possible as often as possible, I`m hoping that Pro does not and that it behaves like V7 .

    Adam,

The Free Sony version is based on Catalogs only.

Pro versions allow the use of the session concept that is, I suspect, what you were using, perhaps without realising it specifically, in V7 Pro.

There are some enhancements for V8 which mean you might want to review some of your previous presets or styles set as defaults for a camera but fundamentally as far as I can ascertain from your description, the Pro version is what you want.

Whether the Sony Pro version or, as an upgrade of your V7 licence, the More Cameras Pro version is really your choice. It depends whether you need or may need the ability to work with non-Sony cameras.

    Adam,

if I may add to Grant's reply, as far as I remember the upgrade procedure from V7 to V8, the first time when a RAW file edited in V7 is opened in V8 a new subfolder is created "Settings8x" which copies the settings from the "Settings7x" folder. Up to this moment nothing changed in your image but when you go then to the Color toolset you'll find under Base Characteristics / Engine an option to upgrade the engine to V8. As long as you don't do this for each (edited) image it will remain with the former version's engine. Now if you open "blank" (unedited) RAW files in V8 the new engine is used automatically. So for example if you want to compare the output from different engine versions just make a copy of the folder which holds your RAW files to another location/drive and then open this copied folder in the new version. You could delete there first all the C1 specific files / subfolders and start editing from scratch OR you could keep the editing information and just update the engine as described above (select all images; press update engine). If this is the best option depends in part of what are your edits because V8 introduced some new features which may allow a different editing approach or allow further editing like healing, cloning via local adjustments.
    Hope this helps.

Thank you Michael. You have dived into the differences where I feared to tread. Kudos.

    Adam,

V8 defaults make use of the newer V8 features and may not be entirely comparable to V7 image by image.

Whether improved or not improved is a VERY subjective assessment if you like the V7 results. You have the opportunity to experiment and decide for yourself. I happen thin think "improved" but I'm not sure I would have said that on first acquaintance.

Make of that statement what you will.
