In my opinion PhaseOne did less for the product then Microsoft did. I'm very, very disappointed and orientating on other DAM now.

What are your top contenders for a DAM alternative?

    See my post in viewtopic.php?f=43&t=15309

I am waiting for Imatch 5.

I plan to keep using Expression Media for as long as I can (i.e., until my Snow Leopard machine dies; I'm assuming EM won't work on Mavericks). I found it to be more stable than iView on my Mac systems. I never even bothered to try Media Pro because of the reported instability and my hunch that Phase One wasn't committed to the product as a standalone DAM.

For Mac users there are very few options. One viable possibility is the still-unreleased catalog for Camera Bits' Photo Mechanic. PM already has structured keywords and Web gallery export, so the catalog, if it's ever released, should integrate well. It won't be a perfect replacement for iView/EM (e.g., no custom fields yet), but the developers are very responsive so I have hopes that it could become the best DAM for Mac users. (And for Nikon users, PM is able to display edited NEF previews on a recent Mac, something that EM/Media Pro, Lightroom, or Aperture are unable to do.)

Thanks for the replies! I looked through the thread that Jim mentioned and got some ideas. Sadly, Imatch is Windows only.

I have over 25k images in Aperture, an application that gets as much attention from Apple as Media Pro does from Phase One. I'm looking to use separate applications for metadata/cataloging and raw processing to not be as much at the whims of businesses that may change focus. Aperture does metadata/cataloging well but is half baked at best when it comes to writing that data to raw files. And I don't care for Lightroom at all.

I'll have a look at Photo Supreme and Photo Mechanic.

Yes, a separate DAM is my preference too.

I forgot about Photo Supreme (IDImager) for the Mac. I think I researched it last year but I don't remember what I learned or why I dismissed it. Probably because the Mac version was brand new. I'll take another look.

I recall checking out Photo Supreme earlier this year and not liking that it didn't handle geotagging. But at this point I may be desperate enough to dump Aperture that I'll overlook that…

Photo Mechanic was fine for initial metadata enrichment but provided zero cataloging & search capability. They're at work on a cataloging app, but nobody knows when or if it will ship.

Just to update this post... my assumption about Mavericks was wrong. I've since discovered that Expression Media works fairly well on Mavericks for some users, depending on work flow and editing software used in conjunction with EM. (See the "EM on Mac OS Mavericks?" thread in the Expression Media section.)

I know EM is old, unsupported, and has size limitations, but it could still be a viable option for some EM users who don't want to use Media Pro. And EM is still available for download from the Phase One archive.

    As do I.

    Amazing, isn't it?

Be careful of what you ask for as you may receive it.

To the OP. I've abandoned MP and adopted LightRoom for my DAM and post processing needs. I was previously a Nikon user and used MP in conjunction with Nikon Capture2. I bought a Fuji X110s last spring and frankly have not picked up my Nikon's since. What became clear was my existing workflow required a major adjustment. If I was going to make the leap to something different, this was the time, so I did.

It's taking me a while to get my head around LR and it does both too much and not enough for you, but it is under active development. This is more than can be said for a lot of the other DAM's floating around.

    Good luck with your efforts.

First IDimager was on my short list but than it was abandoned also (without any warning)...
So, the only serious alternative (so it looks like) is Lightroom.
My workflow needs a major adjustment too, so i'm orienting on that. And on how to migrating my metadata of course (catalog sets, location data and the people field are not compatible). It requires good preparation.
