OK, i've remarked some thing... wheil i was putting back the jpegs from the backup...

    It's quit irronic
Only JPEG-files i've made from images in a C1pro session folder are affected by the problem..
and Only JPEG images with long names;...
    Not scans, not other...

    am i dreaming now ?

    HELP!,
Today, with some new hope i tought lets try it again...

This time one at a time instead of all at once...
    But still the Problem stays...

So what exactly happens.. ? :
    An image: Com_15_07_08_Tovenaar_Franky-00032_Klein.jpg,
    located in: R2D3:PHOTOGRAPHY:Com_15_07_08_Tovenaar_Franky:RT:JPEG
    R2D3=NAS-server,
    Com_15_07_08_Tovenaar_Franky = Session name ( and folder)
RT=Our code for the folder where the Retouched images ( in Tiff) go
JPEG=The JPEG version of the retouched images...

When i Sync Annotations with those JPEG files from inside Expression Media, the file changes its name...
    From: Com_15_07_08_Tovenaar_Franky-00032_Klein.jpg to Com_15_07_08_Tovenaar_#8C27.jpeg
And it does this every time i sync annotations, and ONLY with JPEG images;... tiff's are intact... Raw's also...

I realy would like to move our system from a folder system to a DAM system... But if it does this sort of thing, it just makes a mess of my disks & file namig system... ( i have still 5 nases that ar waiting..😉, and i hate a mess...!!!

    Can some one help?

Hi. Yes I can help. This is a longstanding bug in EM, dating from at least 2008. The problem is EM has a bug that does bad things if your filenames are longer than 31 characters. Keep the filenames under 31 chars and you won't have a problem.

A thread exists about this problem in the old EM forums: http://social.expression.microsoft.com/ ... 4393F27CF6

    Thanks for your help...
That may be on the right path.. That's exactly what happens;... But there is a catch...

    the strange thing is..
That also the Tiff and Raw files have the same name as the JPG only the extension changes...
    For example in this case:
    The Raw is namde: Com_15_07_08_Tovenaar_Franky-00032_Klein.CR2
    The tiff is named: Com_15_07_08_Tovenaar_Franky-00032_Klein.tif
    The JPEG is named: Com_15_07_08_Tovenaar_Franky-00032_Klein.jpg

So it's 3 times the exact same name... And still, it's only the JPEG's are affected..
    Any idea why ?

Any idea why? Because it's a bug, I guess

Best to avoid 31+ char filenames and you won't have to worry about this.

Anyway, as I see it, the whole point of a DAM solution is to get that information OUT of your filenames and into annotations!!!

    mhm you"re absolutely right...
And we'll do so in the future.

the real irritating thing is that, there are thousands of images on those nas servers...
Most of those images are images we made for Clients and/or magazine redactions, thus they also already are deliverd... The client has that file name, but it happens more than ones that a client askes us a verry specific file again because the lost it or the image has to be Re-retouched for an other use, etc etc... So it's a real shitty situation when we now change ALL those file names...
Also the filenames of the Tiff's, the raws and the JPEGS are identical and they have to stay that way, so we can trace them back up to the source... That's real important!...

And its a quit big collection, years and years back..
Until now we worked within a folder structure, and detailed file names, because we were in growth, a young starting studio, with restrected budget... Every thing went way fast... This was thus the only way, we knew of, to keep it in some kind of "order" low-cost and fast....

Thus now the problem is not the future file names, we'll figure out a way to keep them short, the problem is the old file names...

Within Adobe Bridge, it's no problem to add the Meta-Data and key-words for long file names, so we'll use that. It's only extreamly slow process to do this in bridge 😊 ; Expression Media is way faster and way better way to catalogue..

What i figuerd out... is that we'll have to add all the metadata in Bridge, and then add them to a collection in Expressions media... I hope this wil work...

I also hope this will be resolved in the next update... cause it seems to be a realy good APP...

, any way thanks for your help...

I don't have a solution for you and I understand it's a pain in the a$$ but until Phase One is in a position to release an update with this bug fixed, if you can't rename your files I think you better stay with Bridge.

EM is a great program, I've used it since it was iView and there's nothing like it for a DAM program.

I have lodged a support case for this, Phase One is aware of the problem, hopefully we will hear something about a bugfix release not too far in the future.

Hi thanks for your responses, and so we'll leave it that way for now...
But it doesn't take away the fact that we are realy looking into the merge to DAM-system, with respect to our exhisting system...

This is thus a completely other question, Does EM work on a "network" i mean, i have a studio assistant & office assistant and then there is me and so on... Every one should acces this database, i can put it on our server in house no problem, but will this conflict?

This product will not work multi-user on a network, if that is your intended use do NOT try to use this product for that. You need something designed for multi user access. I believe there are several products out there that will do what you need, unfortunately this is not one of them
