C1 5.1 & 5D MkII Tethered
Using a Canon 5D MkII in tethered mode with CO v.5.02 has always been troublesome, like Lanny described it in a previous post:
But now with CO v. 5.1 the situation got worse and makes Capture One unusable:
even if all shots have been uploaded (unfortunately not faster than before...) the capture acquisition progress bar get stuck at 99% and if new shots are done it will take toooooo long (3~5 minutes) to acquire them, if you are lucky before CO freeze or crash...
Before that happens, if we try to quit CO to do a kind of reset, we get a caution message saying:
"Terminate Capture
A capture is currently in progress.
Do you want to terminate the capture and exit?"
But there is nothing to terminate... except for sure CO code !

If you'd like to create a support case we can look into it further, otherwise the issues that users have reported are present in this thread. As there is no definitive cause for these issues I am of the opinion that I should not be projecting my speculations.0 -
Hi,
Today I've shoot all day long with my canon, but not the 5DMKII, with the 1D MKIII, and on 800 captures, no crash, perfect!
Even if I unplug, I just have to plug in and it's working directly.
So, what do you think? is it the camera(the 5DmkII) that is not working? (I use the exactly same configuration Mac book pro+C1 last version+ same usb cable, no CF card inside the camera.
It was so great to work like that!
The only problem was that the rendering of sharp pictures was to slow for my client who was a little bit frustrated!

Ive had the same exact issues. I did get it to work better when NOT using the C1's tethered system but instead go the good ol way of using EOS Utility and let it save into the capture folder of C1. Now EOS utility isn't the most stabile system on the planet but at least it doesnt lock up + you have the option to save to card aswell. I've lost a few too many shots due to C1 locking up like this to appreciate it.

the biggest concern i have when shooting the 5dmk2 tethered to c15 is how long it takes the previews to render. i'm working with a 8core macpro w/16g of ram and it still drags ass. this is troublesome when the client is hovering over the computer has no idea what is coming in besides loads of pixels. the other issues mentioned (freezing and crashing) seem to only be a problem when we are shooting fast.
another thing i would love to see addressed is setting the white balance to the camera via c1 and the ability to use live view. i currently have to run eos utility to use live view and setup a hot folder in c1 during still life shoots. this sometimes causes communication conflicts which crashes the software. do you think any of these issues will get fixed?

Well, how long does it take? It is easy to measure. I took my cell phone's stopwatch in one hand and fired the camera (Cmd+K; shutter time approx. 1/100 sec) with the other. I repeated a few times with both Auto Select New Capture set to either Immediately or When Ready (5D mkII on MacBook Pro 2.3 GHz, CO 5.1.1 Pro, 10.5.8)
Immediately: frame appears after 2.7 sec. and image proxy rendered after 5.6 sec. (total time after Cmd+K).
When Ready: 6.3 sec.
Regarding Live View with Canon: I believe (but may be wrong) that it is up to Canon to make this available through their Software Development Kit to 3rd party developers like Phase One. You can do a feature request in a support case and you'll get a straight answer from the horse's mouth.
And indeed, fast shooting still crashes the application.0 -
Could someone give me a step by step to connect using EOS Utility and C1 Pro using hot folder. I have the latest version and firmware (2.0.4) Do you need to use DPP as well or go direct to C1? Obviously I need to have as fast a preview as possible.
Although Phase One has been very attentive trying to find a solution to the freeze ups and corruption I don't think it makes sense to use C1 alone to tether to the 5D II right now. I am hoping they find a solution soon. I think the problem is related to the memory drain that occurs when shooting. Not being a programmer I have no idea why this happens but when I watch the activity monitor I can see my computer go from approximately 3 GB of free RAM to as low a few hundred Mbs. Usually at this point the program freezes and sometimes the session becomes corrupted. The only way to restore the lost RAM is to restart the computer.
I am just looking for a reliable tethering solution.I will continue to use C1 for file processing since I think it is excellent.0 -
To be clear, Canon EOS utilities and Capture One would use the exact same components to connect the camera... these are provided to us by Canon, simply used as provided. So many errors that exist in one will exist in the other.
To set up a Hot Folder simply;
-Connect Camera to Computer using desire software and designate a destination folder through that program
-Create a new session in Capture One
-Locate the previous set folder, set by the other software
-Right Click on that folder in Capture One and designate it as the "Capture Folder"
-In Capture go to "Camera-> Hot Folder Enabled"0 -

Similar problem exists with shooting tethered with Canon 1Ds MarkII and the latest upgrade 5.1.1
Have reverted to 5.0.2 and everything is working fine.
Hope this problem gets solved at the earliest 😊

After many frustrations I have followed Phase One's advice and reverted back my Mac OS to 10.5.8 and C1 5.02.
After a few shoots it seems to be performing well. I might try 5.1.1 eventually because it jumps to the last frame automatically after a review of earlier frames which 5.02 does not. I wait for the day when I can use the latest C1 version with the latest Mac version. This is only for tethering on my laptop. I still use 5.1.1 on my MacPro with 10.6.3 and it works fine.0
