C1 4 creates a settings file for each image that stores all the settings for the image that you apply in C1, like exposure, tint, ...
The settings file are rather small, and they store all the settings that you definitly want to keep, if you want to reprocess images.

Additionally, it stores a cache file, that is basically a preview of your image with all the settings applied.
When you want to regain disk space, these files can be deleted without losing any settings, and will be regenerated when you browse the folder again with C1.

C1 currently doesn't have any function to clean up these files itself, but as many people have complained about this, I guess Phase One will introduce such a feature in the next updates, or give users the option to select a centralized place for these files.
I hope they will provide both 😊

    Harry,
In addition to what dodgetigger already explained a remark regarding Adobe Bridge. This program has a central camera raw cache for previews with a fixed size, adjustable, minimal 1 GB and a central thumbnail cache (can be made decentral like in CO4). Both caches can be purged manually.

The purpose of all these preview files in cache folders is to give you a fast display of an image on your screen. Most image software use previews, some don't and they have the disadvantage of slower performance when reopening a folder with files (in general).
