I suggest to contact Phase One support. Could be something with your setup.

Using C1 11 as beta and then now in released version, I have a strange behavior with the stars (notation), it is very simple the stars I do attibute to an image are not kept they just vanishe after a short time.

Is it possible that you are working with multiple image selections and inadvertently change star ratings of other images by changing the star rating of the "most selected" image?

Ensure that the editing mode is set to "single image", if you don't want to affect multiple images.

Apologies if you were aware of this potential reason.

Hate to drag up an old post but I'm also seeing the same random loss of star ratings. How do I "Ensure that the editing mode is set to 'single image'? I'm on C1 11.1.1

Google lead me to this in the C1 8 documentation:
    https://help.phaseone.com/en/CO8/Optimi ... aspx#item7

It still applies in C1 v11

Thanks for the tip IanL. I tried modifying star rating with that button on and off in various combinations but changes to the star rating won't stay put when I navigate away from the image I'm working on to advance to the next image. Stranger still is the fact that if I have Photomechanic open simultaneously with C1 I can hop over to PM, change the star rating then hop back to C1 and the star rating updates and stays put. Kinda weird.

If you sometimes use PhotoMechanic to give star ratings, I wonder whether there is some kind of conflict there. In Capture One preferences, under the Image section, there are check boxes for Prefer embedded XMP over Embedded IPTC, and one for Prefer Sidecar XMP over Embedded Metadata. Perhaps if you have the latter checked, Capture One keeps looking at an XMP file created by MP and over-riding ratings you have set in C1.

Thanks Ian3. Hadn't thought about the possibility of different apps colliding. Let me spend a couple hours playing with that. Will re-post when I know more.

Well I didn't have to play with it very long. Ian3 you are correct! Changing preferences in C1 to 'prefer side car XMP over embedded XMP fixes the disappearing star ratings while still allowing Photo Mechanic to change star ratings that are seen immediately in C1. Seems like I remember also having to fuss with this whole XMP issue in Lightroom several years ago.
    Regards again, Mark
