Valid Session Name ??? 4.5 Pro
Attempting to overcome the extremely poor ergonomics and microscopic font and icon sizes of 4.5 Pro, I tried to create a new session (I gather that the old way of just clicking on the + sign was too easy, besides the fact that it had legible fonts) and received the error message "Give the session a valid name". Since sessions were introduced in CO Pro, I've been giving the same type of name: City, Date, Subject Name; the session folders with their names created previously by v3.7.9 appear in the Library panel of 4.5 Pro so I gather that their names can be read (although I have trouble going through the folder hierarchy because it is difficult to read the fonts because of their size). So, the question is, what constitutes a valid session name? Presumably, I shall not be obliged to create sessions in 3.7.9 using my naming scheme (is it that aberrant?) so that I can then use them in v 4.5?

This really is a problem. What constitutes a valid session name . It is clearly different than in the past, as I cannot create a session using my long-used session naming convention: Location, Date (16/10/08), Subject. I continue to get an error message that I must introduce a valid sesion name. 0 -
Hello, The problem is the "/" This is not a legal filename character as it is generally used to mark a new folder. It can be a bit confusing because Apple allows filenames to use the character whereas others do not. Try using - or _ to separate the date. 0 -
Thank you for your reply Jon. You know, in 3.7.9 and for the longest time before, CO Pro did this automatically, so one must conclude that this is yet another functionality to disappear, along with the capabilities of the focus tool, useful aspects of the Rotation tool, being able to access numerical values and change them from the keyboard, a pipette in the Curves dialogue box of the exposure panel (even available in 4.1). I've been a CO Pro user since it became available on the Mac, and I must admit to being mystified by the current iteration. Presumably, I should know what to do with a session and its template of files, but this has changed with a change of template. I don't even know how to remove a session any longer in the current version. 0 -
Ralph,
My best suggestion would just be to hang in there and continue to get to know the software better. Changes are an adjustment for sure, but I think once you get used to it you will like it.
-What do you find lacking in the rotation tool? We have more options than ever for very precise rotation or quick 45 degree rotation.
-Can you clarify what you mean by "being able to access numerical values and change them from the keyboard,"?
-In the main cursor bar in the top middle of the screen there is the dropper to select a curve point... in fact there are all your dropper tools there. from that selection you could make color corrections without even having a color tool palate up.
-Sessions... are pretty much the same in terms file structure. Opening and closing simply occurs in the file menu. One great new feature of sessions is that each session will save your tool locations in that session. You can also have more than one session open at the same time.
For all the functions that have been modified, not included, or not yet implemented, there are many new features that provide photographers the ability to do things they could not before.0 -

In 3.7.9, double clicking on the icon of the rotation tool opened a dialogue box that permitted very fine incremental changes to be made in regard to orientation.
In 3.7.9, and long before, it is possible to change numerical values (for instance of exposure, white balance, etc.,) directly from the keyboard using the arrow keys, or shift + arrow keys.
In 3.7.9 there is a very effective focus tool.
In 3.7.9, image previews are excellent and going through images to assess them is fluid. In 4.5, there is a pause for each image as it changes focus or whatever it does, and it is cumbersome and a hindrance to workflow.
Even in CO4, there was a pipette directly alongside the Curves dialogue box. Convenient, but of course I leave aside the absence of keyboard navigation for points on a Curve and other amenities.
I am still mystified by the lack of consideration for long time users and that I should have encountered difficulties in creating a session and knowing how to remove it.
Thank you for your attention. I hope that 4.5 will move beyond beta. it is not really stable at all, there are freezes and irksome quirks. It is entirely unlike 3.7.9 in this respect.0 -

Thanks for clarifying, currently you can fine tune the rotation by scrolling with your mouse wheel, or directly entering the number. I do think being able to use the keyboard arrows would solve this problem.

Couldn't agree more, hope to see this in an upcoming releaseIn 3.7.9 there is a very effective focus tool.
We may see this tool again, currently of course you can zoom to 100 in the full screen giving you an even more accurate view of focus. Also another workaround would be to open the viewer window and set it to 100%In 3.7.9, image previews are excellent and going through images to assess them is fluid. In 4.5, there is a pause for each image as it changes focus or whatever it does, and it is cumbersome and a hindrance to workflow.
One major major request we used to get in 3.7 was that the previews were not detailed enough and would only be focused and detailed at 100%. Now the Preview will always be detailed and sharp.Even in CO4, there was a pipette directly alongside the Curves dialogue box. Convenient, but of course I leave aside the absence of keyboard navigation for points on a Curve and other amenities.
Agreed, the pipet should be along side the tool. Now the curve tool on the other hand is actually the only tool currently compatible with keyboard arrows... try it out, I think you like that.
On a closing note, I do want to mention that we are meeting regularly with R&D so the requests we see do not fall on deaf ears.0 -

Thank you again Jon for your reply. It has been possible to use the arrow keys with the Curves tool for a long time in CO Pro. Less convenient is the inability to navigate among points in the Curve from the keyboard, a feature that has been requested for a very long time.0
