I agree that there is a lot of space to improve the heal/clone tool whic is, as you say, unpredictable. I have submitted two cases to the support about that (heal and clone) and I didn't get any positive answer yet.

I didn't try to batch rename.

    Greetings Robert,

I used to batch rename all incoming file to rip off only the 3 letters
and the underscore prefix to be replaced by our archive system.

Was a dream… but I now have to rely on ABFR, more powerful btw.

    My observations...

In a session -- haven't tried when using a catalog -- I can select a group of images and use batch rename without issue.  Typically I'm doing a straight string replacement, not using any tokens.  My batch renames are usually less than 30 images.

What kind of batch renames are you doing?

I find the heal tools to be about mostly effective.   Once in a while the mask doesn't show and other times the circles and arrow for a particular change is missing when I turn them on to make a needed adjustment.  The tool is usable, but annoying.

    Hi Marco

     — What kind of batch renames are you doing?

Typically, a file will come as "DSC_9999.NEF". I remove the first
four characters and replace them with the archiving section that
is a single capital. Then I will replace ".NEF" with say " XD.NEF"
These identify the body it was shot with and who did it.

The final result goes from "DSC_9999.NEF" to "F9999 XD.NEF".
ABFR permits to do all operations in one go. I was able to rename
any number as I needed and never met a limit — now, it crashes
    at one single file.

The tool is usable, but annoying.

Annoying indeed… I prefer to edit in a real pixel editor from Sérif!

I think that the seriousness of the app is compromised when they
work harder at converting Lr users by implementing catalogues and
others. Up to v.12, I got many students over to CO12 but since then…
