Where did previews go and how to regenerate just one?
Went to a session to output a couple of new files and all my previews had become low resolution. My preview image size is set to 2560. I selected one of the 3 files I wanted to create a new output of and hit regenerate previews and C1 started regenerating previews for all the files in the session, which is a large session and also happens to be on an external HD, so I couldn't do anything withe the session for about 20 mins. Assuming there's a preference setting somewhere I'm missing. I've got 16TB of storage, so not bothered about storing larger usable previews.

Nick,
I assume you know that the preview is for the viewer and with output you mean a file output jpg or tiff.
In my experience the 'regenerate previews' only regenerates previews for the selected images. Unless no preview is found where it is expected for each image; then for all images in your selected collection (without a preview) a preview file is generated by C1 and stored alongside your session Capture folder, on ext. HD in your case.
However, you can work with your session whilst the previews are generated in the background.
Do you consider 2560 as low or hi res? Preview size should be your monitor resolution or higher. The viewer will work with the preview file if you don't zoom in to a level for which the resolution is no longer sufficient. C1 then (if you zoom in) will take the raw file and apply all adjustments on the fly to show you the zoomed-in part of the image. Depending on your sysrem speed, exrernal HD connection and speed, and the way you work (zoom level), a higher res preview might increase your perceived performance of the C1 application, and testing different preview sizes is probably a good idea.
You might want to test this with adjusted images, use all tools and layer types you usually use, because some tools are hardware accelerated using the graphics card and some are not.

P.S. For previews, the only preference setting is the resolution.

Hi BeO - Yes, I do know that.
I'm on 13.1.1.24 running on the top of the line 16" MBP, USB-C to G-Raid external HD. While not a Mac Pro, my system should be plenty fast enough to handle this, even when I'm working off the external HD (when I'm trying to output a new version of 2 files for web use I'm obviously not going to pull the whole session onto my MBP drive).
No, I couldn't work with the files I wanted as previews were being regenerated as the files I wanted to make adjustments to were pixelated, so I couldn't make informed decisions, even on something as simple as opening up the shadows a little.
I've used 2560 as my preview size for years, no problem. It works on my external NEC PA 272W. Didn't there used to be a Preference setting where you could set how long full sized previews were saved for though??? Most of my C1 use is global, so images at full view.
I'm a pro photographer, so work in C1 a lot, and this isn't normal. I have seen it happen a couple of times the past, but not enough to be reproducible.

Nick,
If you have a significant discrepancy between the saved Preview file size and the resolution of the screen you are viewing on it is just possible that C1 might see a need to recalculate the preview file IN MEMORY in order to work efficiently with the screen at either higher or lower resolution.
Since C1 tends to load all the files for a folder (when in a session) or as many as the selection parameters might suggest (for a catalog) there could indeed be quite a bit of work to undertake. Mitigating the effect could be tricky.
If the previews being accessed were previously saved with a different resolution, for whatever reason, then opening them with a new default preview size is also likely to cause recalculation, especially if some sort of presentation emulation is active - proofing for example.
To comment further would be somewhat speculative without knowing quite a lot more about the circumstances involved.

I don't think there was ever any facility to set how long previews were saved for. There is no real need to - the previews (in a session) are in .cop sidecar files. I wouldn't expect them to disappear. But I have sometimes seen Capture One to take its time deciding to render the previews: it seems to be a bit random, sometimes taking no time at all and sometimes needing to be kicked into action for instance by regenerating a preview.

Thanks for your thoughts all.
As I'm not (knowingly) changing the preview resolution, I guess all I can do is assume there's some sort of bug between C1, the OS, the computer (as I said a laptop, but still the fully loaded 16" MBP that is used just for imaging so as clean a system as I can get) and the external HD the sessions are kept on.
I will say I've been having issues with this version of C1. I've had to reinstall several times now as I keep losing Edit > Undo, which is obviously quite a problem.
