workflow with topaz question
using C121 and new to topaz (sharpen AI, current version). I'm under the impression that the most effective workflow is to make edits in C1, then 'edit with' from C1 to launch topaz and hand it the edit file, probably using TIFF as the intermediary. My understanding is that after topaz edits, when I apply changes, TOPAZ will hand the edited file back to C1.
My questions are:
- is this the most effective workflow for ease of use and maintaining image quality
- when back in C1, would any further edits be applied against the TIFF? Should the sharpening appear in my image in C1? how does C1 handle that adjustments were made to RAW and TIFF - did I lose my edits and just have the TIFF back in C1 to which I may apply additional edits?
I could export a TIFF and then open in topaz to control the image more easily in a non-destructive way but that does add a full extra step to workflow that 'edit with' perhaps makes a little easer. I'm assuming the answers would be the same for C1 20 however wasn't sure so posted here as I have both, prefer to use v21 if possible.

When back in C1 further edits should be done on the TIFF (of course). Nothings can bring further edits on RAWs into an existing and finished TIFF. You did not lose adjustments made before "Edit with...", but you would lose with "Open with...".
And yes, you may make additional edits on your TIFF after coming back from Topaz XY. It is so that you will not lose edits on this TIFF when you OPEN and edit it with Topaz or another external editor. But you will not see the adjustments of C1 during editing with for example Topaz Sharpen. You can see these adjustments when coming back from Topaz in C1 as Capture One is writing the adjustments in its own database.

When I am in C1 after making topaz adjustments, will my existing variant be the one to continue to edit (e.g. does C1 know somehow to combine the RAW + TIFF edits into a single variant)?
Are you saying that if I continue to edit the correct variant in C1 after topaz edits, the sharpening will be in the file, just not applied in the previews? (as I didn't think I saw the sharpening reflected in my on-screen preview after the topaz edit. )
I would try to sharpen as a last step in workflow but helpful just in case.

No, Capture One will combine nothing. It is quite logical: You should think about cropping, tuirning transistions and more before exporting to Topaz. How should adjustments work in a RAW file without notes in database or side car. And this sidecar or database entry can never work with a exported file including this adjustments. Each transition would come twice, a crop will shift the content and so on.
The exported F´file (TIFF) is what to work with Topaz an further on in C1 too - if necessary.
You missunderstood me in an other case: If you export ("Edit with...") a TIFF for Topaz to work with you get all the adjustments in the TIFF you made before this export. When finished the TIFF will be given back to C1 - with all edits you have done in Topaz. But remenber: When you go an adjusting this TIFF in C1 it will work like with a RAW. If you edit the TIFF outside C1 ("Open with...") you will not see the adjustments you have done in C1. They are not lost but you can see them always in C1 only. Except you export it with all adjustments with "Edit with..." into a new file. Not a good idea to make a chain of files of the same image...
Therefore I always finishe the image with Capture One and then I go to external editors if needed. In rare cases there are minimum corrections needed afterwards - then I use C1 with the TIFF. But only if really needed.
And yes, you should ever sharpen in the last step. ;)
