Mac Mini Color management problem
After using Windows since 3.1 my engineering background kicked in and I became fascinated by the possibilities of m1 macs so I bought a basic Mac mini (250 gig hard disk, 8 gig ram) as a Christmas present to myself. Having felt my way around big sur I have loaded Capture One on the machines. First impressions are very positive, it start far faster than on my hi spec Windows machine and in general feels just as responsive.
My main problem at the moment is that I have not found a way to calibrate my 2 NEC displays, none of the calibration software I have tried even recognises the presence of the monitors. l have been reduced to manually setting the wide gamut monitor to Argb using the on screen menu and the other to srgb then using the appropriate settings in ColorSync followed by setting the brightness by eye using the on screen display. Not the most accurate way of doing thing. Has anyone any managed to calibrate screens using, for instance, an i1 display colorimeter and if so how?

I used to use i1 with the associated software, never had a problem, be that on iMac or older Mac Pro 2012.
Also used Colorchecker on my EIZO displays - equally faultless. Can it be that your Mac Mini is based on the new M1 chip or Big Sur OS, and hence that the i1 software has not been fully updated yet ?

Did you try different input sources?
My M1 woun't play well with the Display connected through TB3 I needed to use DP.0 -
Hi both
I have one display connected by HDMI and the other to TB3/USB-C connection using a TB3/USB-C to DP adaptor cable. There is a problem with NEC Spectraview software and HDMI on MAC because of the way MAC communicates over HDMI (the recommended workaround is to use a USB to USB cable in parallel to the HDMI cable but that does not work either). I think I shall have to wait until Spectraview is updated to support Apple Silicon to do a proper calibrate and profile of my screens. In the mean time I had reset the two screens to factory default using the display on screen controls then selected the aRGB preset on the PA241W and the sRGB preset on the P242W, I also set the brightness to around 140 cd/m^2 again using the on screen controls. I then simply set the display profiles to aRGB and sRGB as appropriate in system preferences/display.
Using this method the displays look ok though as usual the different backlight technology in the two displays is quite apparent, the CCFL backlight on the PA241W is warmer to the eye than LCD backlight on the P242W. This is noticeable even when the 2 screen were accurately profiled (DeltaE less than 1) in the past on Windows.

Hi all
Further to the above I have found a clear statement on the X-rite web site about this problem:
Apple Silicon M1 Macintosh Systems Profiling Issues.
Products Affected:
i1 Display Studio
i1 Display Pro
i1 Display Pro Plus
i1 Studio
There is currently a known display profiling issue on M1 Apple Silicon computers where the application reports that it is unable to detect a monitor on the system.
This seems to be due to how external displays are addressed within the M1 implementation of the Big Sur (Mac OS 11) operating system. This was not evident in the pre-release versions of Big Sur as the Beta was only available for Intel powered computers. The issue only became apparent when the new M1 based computers were shipped and made available to our users and developers.
The Apple Silicon and Big Sur combination also has a number of other display issues. Some monitor manufacturers have seen the M1 Macs not displaying full 8-bit colour to the display (thousands rather than millions of colours). Together with reports that some of the Apple Silicon computers are unable to drive a second monitor when multiple displays are connected. These general graphics problems seem to be affecting all manufacturers of display calibration systems to different degrees.
Apple will hopefully issue an update that addresses the graphics problems, but in addition, our developers are working in parallel to provide software updates for release early in the new year. Please bookmark the update page below for the latest information.
